Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
Sasha Kagan’s patterns are not for the faint of heart. Take the 1940s-inspired zip jacket, Cable Flower. It incorporates five different stitches and six different colors. The pattern charts take up a double-page spread. Whew! But though most of the projects will only be tackled by experienced knitters, even novices will enjoy paging through this attractive, oversize book, full of enticing color photographs. British designer Kagan has long been admired for her intricate, textured patterns, which she says are inspired by the natural beauty she sees around her home in Wales. The 22 projects here, a “retrospective” of patterns, include sweaters, wraps, jackets, coats, and scarves. Back matter includes pictures of stitches used and techniques, including intarsia. --Ilene Cooper

Product Description
Popular knitwear designer Sasha Kagan (Crochet Inspiration) presents a collection of 22 classic designs for the discerning woman of fashion. A wardrobe of magnificent cardigans, jackets, coats, tops, sweaters, wraps, and scarves showcases Sasha’s signature use of pattern, color, and texture. The result: a very wearable group of timeless pieces for the style-savvy knitter (who has intermediate to advanced skills) to enjoy making and wearing. For a cool day on the beach or water, choose a pullover sweater with bright boats sailing across a sea-blue background. Or show off a sleeveless pink crop top, sprinkled with pretty flowers, small ruffles, and an under the bust tie. And the pompom-edged scarf is simply irresistible. Every item is a showstopper!

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with Sasha Kagan's new book, April 19, 2008
Because I loved the previous Sasha Kagan knitting books I bought, I ordered "Knitwear" too. I'm disappointed in
1) The quality of the photographs in this book - you cannot see details clearly and the colours are bland. In her other books you can get a really good idea of what the finished product will look like.
2) There's not much new in the intarsia flower patterns - they seem to be copies of previous efforts with a bit of cabling and/or lace thrown in.
3) Her sizing has taken a backward step after the roomy patterns in "Country Inspiration". These patterns seem to stop at 40" Finished Garment Size. Not one for the Ampleknitter - unless you want to use the charts on your own basic pattern.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite new knitting book, April 3, 2008
I just received this book yesterday along with 4 other knitting books, so I haven't been able to test out any of the patterns yet, but I can't wait to start! I have a pretty awesome library of knitting books, but I have to say this is the first book I've ever seen that has more than a few patterns worth knitting. I truly plan to make all but a couple of the 22 patterns in this book. The sweaters featured are absolutely adorable and trendy with lots of nice details and trims to give them a real designer look. My problem with so many of the sweater patterns out there is that they are so bulky and shapeless, but I love the designs in this book because they are so feminine and designed to be flattering. There are a few short sweaters to show off a slender waist including a really cute sleeveless top with straps and ruffled edges that I can't wait to knit up. These patterns don't look to be for the faint of heart, but there are so many beautiful ones that it might just inspire a beginner to attempt more!

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay if you don't mind tweaking patterns...., October 11, 2008
What was most frustrating about this book was that the photographer seemed more interested in focusing on the backgrounds rather than on the designs themselves. One design has a belt (Rosebud), but you never see it in the photos. Virtually no detail close-ups, except in the techniques section.

Several of the charts were on the small side, so you will have to enlarge them for use.

The patterns for the most part are for the tall and slender. Some of the short sweaters (like Nautical) would be nice if they were lengthened to a regular sweater length. Also, if you are substituting yarns, the Nautical is a great one for using up a few yards here and there of your stash, instead of buying an entire ball of yarn for such small amounts in each motif. The Valentine Sweater has a nice chart design, but the ribbing is a bit chunky-looking.

The technique section is nice, but would have been better done in either very smooth yarns or with illustrations.

Not a bad book if you don't mind having to adjust the patterns, but check it out of your library first.
