Biography

Best known for their 1970 AM pop classic "Green-Eyed Lady," Sugarloaf was formed in 1969 in Denver out of the ashes of the Moonrakers, which had released an album in 1968. Singer/keyboardist Jerry Corbetta and guitarist Bob Webber founded the group, adding Moonraker mates Bob MacVittie on drums and Veeder Van Dorn on rhythm guitar, plus bassist Bob Raymond. Originally dubbed Chocolate Hair, the… Read more in Amazon's Sugarloaf Store

3.0 out of 5 stars Best of Sugarloaf, April 22, 2003
By Jack H. Hopkins (Longview, TX United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The best of Sugarloaf would be the double CD "Sugarloaf/Spaceship Earth." This collection seems to favor their post-Liberty work, which was not as good to me. They seemed to be more pop-oriented, less rock. The best cuts are, of course, "Green-Eyed Lady," the long version (the single version was 3:33, by the way), and "Tongue In Cheek," a fantastic guitar tour-de-force (long version)with great lightning-speed organ solo. Too bad lead vocalist Jerry Corbetta went on to sing in a latter-day version of the Four Seasons.

4.0 out of 5 stars under-rated hippy band, May 26, 2001
By Kevin Brown (mebane, n.c. (i think)) - See all my reviews
this is very good over-looked hippy music - the 1st track is the full length version & the 2nd tune (i had never heard of anything other than "green-eyed lady") was such a pleasant surprise - they were a pretty tight band
but
i suggest you buy the disc which complies their 1st and 2nd albums onto one disc ("sugarloaf" and "spaceship earth") - you'll find more hidden gems there (*and* the full length version of "green-eyed lady") that disc has 16 tracks and at *least* 9 really great songs - try it..
peace out - space puppy

3.0 out of 5 stars Kinda dumb group name!, June 24, 2001
By vonbontee (Brampton, ON Canada) - See all my reviews
Yes indeed Kevin, the 6:50 "Green-Eyed Lady" is found here, although the hit version was pretty long in itself for a pop single, something like 5 1/2 minutes as I recall. Anyone who likes that song knows this band's sound & will like this. Early-to-mid'70s organ-dominated proggy stuff, less metallic than Deep Purple and Uriah Heep, less wanky than Yes or ELP. And don't forget their 2nd & last hit, the great "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You" complete with CBS's phone number spelled out touch-tone style!
