5.0 out of 5 stars Technical melodic brilliance, September 13, 2002
By RxxktheVote (maryland) - See all my reviews
This album is without a doubt my favorite metalcore release of all time and a constant contender for my overall top ten... here's why: Shai Hulud are one of the best bands to ever mix raw emotion and raw brutality. Equal parts beautiful guitar melodies and skull crushing breakdowns, topped off with poetic lyrics and throat lacerating vocals. Add complex timings which never seem forced or overwhelming, and you have Shai Hulud.

Seriously, this band is genius, and I would recommend Once Nourished to fans of bands as broad as Iron Maiden, At the Drive In, Dillinger Escape Plan, Lamb of God and System of a Down. One could make a case for calling this emo because of the heartfelt lyrics and emotional guitarwork... but it's a weak comparison... Shai Hulud defies any pigeonholing. Did I mention the drummer is ridiculous?

Solely Concentrating on the Negative of the Aspects of Life contains enough stop and go riffery to appease "math rock" fans and still remains anthemic. This Wake I Myself Have Stirred is the most straightforward song (and my favorite), with a chorus that would make In Flames blush... For the World contains the riff that killed Elvis....

There's no point describing every track because they are all absolutely classic. Words cannot express how masterful this album is

5.0 out of 5 stars These guys are sooooooo good!!!, September 26, 1999
By A Customer
These guys are unbelievable. They somehow manage to blend this fabulous concoction of heavy riffs, melodic metal/hardcore, gut-wrenching vocals, and raw emotion. It makes you feel angry and sad at the same time. I don't know how they do it but it is frickin' awesome! I love this album and I love Shai Hulud. Musicians and songwriters this creative, innovative, and talented should get way more recognition than they do. Check out their other work, too. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars F@ckin Awsome!, July 5, 1999
By A Customer
This Cd is a must have. This is for anyone who likes hardhitting drumwork, powerfull vocals, and melodic hardcore that hits u like a ton of bricks. You cant get anymore emotional than Chad, and hes still so young. Theses guys are the real deal and they have certainly changed my life. Theres not many bands that I would devote my time to reviewing, but I support them all the way. I also had the pleasure of seeing them live. They tore up the stage and everyone went nuts. I also had the pleasure of speaking with them, they are as down to earth as your gonna get. I wish them the best of luck and cant wait for new material.
