After the success of the Beach Boys' first two Nik Venet-produced albums (Surfin' Safari and Surfin' USA), the late veteran producer graciously handed the studio reins to band founder and chief songwriter Brian Wilson, and one of the most spectacular--and troubling--careers in American popular music truly began to blossom. The title track was the band's first top 10 ballad (and last surfing-themed hit, this in the summer of 1963!) and a notable step forward in the maturation of its sound. But it was Brian Wilson's work with frequent early collaborator Gary Usher, "In My Room," that's the album's real revelation. Lushly produced and performed to aching perfection, the song opens a window to Wilson's pensive and often troubled soul. The first of many quantum leaps Wilson's music would achieve in the mid '60s. --Jerry McCulley

Here is the Beach Boys' third Capitol album,at least in America. After scoring a handful of hits from their first two albums SURFIN' SAFARI and SURFIN' U.S.A.,they score more from this late 1963 release. There's the #1 title track,CATCH A WAVE,another #1,LITTLE DEUCE COUPE,another #1,and another #1,IN MY ROOM. Jan & Dean recorded a song with the same music from Brian Wilson's CAW(sorry,I don't know the title). IMR is based on Brian's written thoughts(the lyrics were what he was thinking of at the time of composition). Two other tracks that I love are HAWAII,which was a minor hit and another Brian Wilson composition,YOUR SUMMER DREAM which sounds so beautiful. Hey,what would this California band want with Hawaii when they have all they need and want in California? Also,Alan Jardine returned to the group after a brief absence. I even love the instrumental BOOGIE WOODIE which was probably inspired by BOOGIE WOOGIE,a hit song from the swing era of the 1930's and 40's.

This is one the best of The Beach Boys early albums, their 3rd LP in fact. But get the import of this albums paired up with another Beach Boys albums "Shut Down, Vol. 2" from the year after instead. That CD has both albums IN STEREO - this Japanese CD is mono. Plus that CD comes with a great booklet and cover art, etc. Forget the album-style slipcase. The other CD collection has 2 albums for the price of 1, is in stereo, and has great packaging. Get that one instead while it lasts and forget this version.
