Good Songs, Bad Presentation, September 28, 2003
This is a great, overlooked album. The songs are all very strong lyrically, and the only weakness is in the dated arrangements and production. There is an inescapable presence of the 80's in many of the pieces on this album, and that's a shame. The album directly after this one, the self-titled 'Michael McDermott', is a near flawless effort, and if you've never been introduced to his music before, you should start with that album before delving into this one.

Best of a Great Artist, January 26, 2007
Michael and I grew up in the same place, played some of the same clubs, back when, ran into each other from time to time. This and 620 W. Surf remain my favorite McDermott albums. The writing is outstanding, the performances passionate... If tunes like "Leave It Up To The Angels" and "Just West of Eden" don't have your foot tapping, your body moving and you're not at least mouthing the words, you need to be checked for pulse & respiration. If Lantern doesn't leave you something like misty-eyed, go along next time they're headed to the Wizard to ask for a heart.
From 620 West Surf, "Wall I Must Climb" alone is worth the price of the CD. Profound and masterful, he takes responsibility for his life and shows us all by example... while playing a damned fine harp part to boot!:)
Michael has grown up since these albums came out. Like most of us do, he's become more cerebral, and a bit more guarded, puts honest emotions on the line a bit less these days. Be glad we have these recordings to enjoy his passionate side as well as the folk-singer he mostly is these days.

Modern Troubadour is virtually without peer, August 24, 2006
I own all of Michael's albums and Gethsemane is my favorite one. This artist's ability to paint a picture and tell a story with words and music is unmatched in modern songwriting.
To me, songwriting, and music in general, is simply a means of communication - the lyrics are the message and the music is the medium. The problem is, so few artists can do both things well. Michael McDermott is one of those artists.
When you ask a Michael McDermott fan what their favorite artist is OTHER than MM, the name they mention most frequently is Bruce Springsteen - and the comparison is apt. Both men can tell a great story in song and both sing with an energy and a passion rarely approached by other artists.
It's too bad that there are no samples to listen to here, but if you check out Michael's self-titled album, you can get a good sense of what this album is like. However, the lyrics on Gethsemane are more profound and involving. If you appreciate a well crafted song delivered earnestly and with passion, you don't want to miss this one. Highly recommended.
