Editorial Reviews

George Thatcher: Heart of the Rock - New Zealand
Ooh yeah! This is how I like it. Keyboards and guitars all over the place, melodies soft, melodies heavy, grunt and subtlety, all rolled together into one package. Not exactly a contemporary nineties sounding band are 8084 (eight-oh-eight-four), who definitely have their sound and hearts set in the eighties. But then that whats this site is all about!

Hailing from Vermont, which is not known as a breeding ground for melodic rock, 8084 have defied the odds and produced some wonderful pompous AOR. Contemporaries include Fortune (the 1985 version), Sugarcreek, Duke Jupiter, and Magnum. The latter is a fair comparison considering Randy Smith's vocals veer close to Bob Catley territory. Overall though, each track is a memorable workout, and I've certainly given it a fair spin on the CD player in recent weeks. These guys are backed by the same team that bought you Under Fire's re-released 1985 album, namely Gary Borress and ex New England drummer Hirsh Gardiner who does production duties. So you know it's gonna be good. But how good?

Well, if there's a weak track on this platter I can't find it. The whole thing is pretty varied, but the energy level and enthusiasm are right up there. Listen to tracks like 'Fire' and the superb opener 'Too Late For Love'. The track 'Hold On' is a deadringer for Duke Jupiter's 'Dancing On The Edge', while guitar crunch abounds on 'Thunder In Her Heart' and the last track 'Call Me'. In between times, songs like 'Badman' and the lovely ballad 'She Comes To Me' show what this band are capable of.

'So Far' is 8084's fourth album, and judging from what I've heard here, I hope the hell this is not the last! For the listener, you can check out MP3 tracks from their website. However, this album is so good that all discerning AOR and melodic rock fans (particularly those veering on the pomp side of things), should buy a copy immediately.

Product Description
Compilation from classic AOR act features songs from all 3 of their melodic rock albums. This GB Music Limited release has 12 tracks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Where the 80's still rule., December 19, 2005
I just saw these guys recently and this disc captures their energy well. My thinking is....they should have been huge in 1987. I believe that's their thinking too, as they continue to dress, act, and rock like any quality hair-band from that decade. They have in fact been together for 23 years. The truth is though, these songs are really good, and you might call them excellent if you're still playing Bon Jovi and Journey in your house. The guitarist makes his playing look as easy as his high-kicks. If you don't get one of their discs, at least go see them. It's alot of fun, they also play many covers, and all the girls with big hair in tight jeans magically appear. Just like 1987.

5.0 out of 5 stars AOR is alive and well in Vermont (yes, Vermont)!, June 16, 2004
By Art Wynne (Mendham, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
While skiing in Vermont this past winter, I happened to catch 8084 in concert at Charaktors in Ludow. The place was rockin'--reminded me of concerts from 20 years ago! Loud, lively (...)--an absoulutely fantastic performance! So I bought the CD and it is just like the show. In fact, the CD is now a staple in the car for those roadtrips to Vermont up the NY Thruway. Can't wait for their next CD, "The Last Great Train," to hit the stores.

This is a great CD. My favorites are "Hold On" and "Surrender" All the songs are worthy but I have worn out tracks 5 & 11.
