Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Jaw-dropping collection of extremely groovy Jazz and Soul tracks from the late '60s and early '70s, courtesy of the Atlantic and Warner Brothers labels. Although not as Psychedelic as their Rock counterparts, these exhilarating tracks are still very soul-expanding and mind-blowing! Features far out selections by Gary Burton ('Vibrafinger'), Freddie Hubbard ('This Is Combat I Know'), Charles Lloyd ('Sorcery'), Yusef Lateef ('Back Home'), Eddie Harris ('Smoke Signals') and more, including the very rare 'Spontaneous Simplicity' by the man who was born Psychedelic, Sun Ra. Warner.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Trippiest and Grooviest Soul Jazz compilation I've ever heard !, October 5, 2009
This review is from: Psychedelic Jazz & Soul (Audio CD)
Long before the jam bands, Jazz musicians jammed...
and no doubt, many did pick up on the vibes of the psychedelic era...
Remember middle aged Buddy Rich getting hip with his Nehru jacket and psychedelic album covers visa vis Mercy, Mercy - -
or the Rhassan Roland Kirk's late '60s/early '70s sound - - for example, him tripping out on SAY A LITTLE PRAYER...
Or how about Paul Humphrey & the Cool Aid Chemists?
That said - - admittedly, not all the experiments worked... some, in fact were downright corny.
(I'll spare the examples.)
This album, however represents experiments that worked...most of them by cutting edge Jazz masters...
The tracks are genuinely psychadelic... most of the tracks are predictably Jazzy, Funky and Groovy...
especially those by Lateef, Gary Burton and Roland Kirk (who's FREAKS FOR THE FESTIVAL takes first prize in my book!)
a few, however are downright weird... say two bizarre freeform tracks with Freddie Hubbard -- one that has a European guy reciting even weirder poetry... and another, a lady trying to get down into the mind of... (long pause) Sharon Tate and the fine folks over at Helter Skelter, Inc. "He made me feel that I can play the guitar... he made me feel that I could hold a knife..."
Lateef's second cut on the album has a tune called Raymond Winchester in which the band is kicking out a very groovy Latin type thing, but Lateef is playing some bizarre reed thing and answered by trippy violins... (Check out his album, The Blue Yusef Lateef which is now available on MP3.)
Also included, Black Heat's CHECK IT ON OUT, which to me is really straight funk...
Mashed in amidst all the eclecticism are Sun Ra and the Zappa-esque sounding Charlie Mariano, who for some reason don't quite stand out amidst the madness...
Then again, come to think of it - - if you want to hear great psychadelic Jazz circa that era, why not cop a listen to Zappa's The Grand Wazoo or Hot Rats - - really, these guys did is it quite well, but Zappa did it best...
nonetheless... this really is a great example experimental music that still grooves - - takes you on a mind trip yet makes you want to dance at the same time... and what's wrong with that?
Oh - - the album has a sequal, though to be honest, I think it would have been cooler as a RHINO type box set thang.

P.S. Not a single sitar... thumbs up to the compiler !
