3.0 out of 5 stars hm... it's okay.., July 1, 2009
The first couple of tracks are tight and really necessary to be heard. Actually notable tracks, that "IF" you can buy `em on mp3 separately, i highly recommend that. ..while the rest of the disc sounds like a bad 90's alt-rock band struggling to find themselves by experimenting with outdated electronics. Basically... the disc as a whole, sorry to day, is crap. I placed it in my sell pile three days after bought it & I ripped the good tracks onto my GF's ipod. This band could be great... but sound more like a flop on this disc. Although ...I'm curious to see where they are now....

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and engaging, November 4, 2005
By Stlarmie "Stlarmie" (California, USA) - See all my reviews

Probably one of the most compelling and engaging bands I've heard in a long time, the four-piece Viva K is a drum machine accented with driving guitars, funk induced bass, eastern sitar and tabla, and all propelled by an amazing vocalist whose voice is both haunting and beautiful. Singer Ween Callas takes her voice to schizophrenic highs and powerful breathy lows, bringing the music to an almost ethereal psychedelic level. Musically, the band fluxes between western, fiery guitar slashers and eastern spirituality cleansers. This ingenious mix leaves the listener in a deep trance while trying to digest the layered depth of their music. Produced by Eli Janney, Viva K has those elements of Janney's band, the legendary Girls Against Boys, which consists of a perfect bridge between rock and dance music. I seriously doubt that anyone who listens to this disc could deny that musically, it's light years beyond what anybody else is doing today. This is, without a doubt, one of the greatest discs of this year. -Kevlar7 Slug Magazine

3.0 out of 5 stars For fans of Siouxsie's later sound, September 7, 2005
Reading about this band from the hipster faux-boho Silver Lake area of L.A., and how they began jamming with a sitar-driven sound in the wake of/for the wake of George Harrison, I was curious. Unfortunately, the sitar only is audibly effective on four songs here; the majority favor instead a post-punkish familiar dance-floor take-off on Siouxsie-style vocals and pretty typical "alternative" grooves. It's not bad, but not as original as I had hoped. If they had stuck with the more psychedelic explorations more hinted at than fully developed in some of the sitar-driven songs, they would have distinguished themselves more from many other groups who have followed by now a well-treaded path over the drum-bass-keys-shriek-wail terrain.
