Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
A live-wire improviser in avant-garde jazz settings who also has a pedigreed background in country fiddling, Brooklyn-born violinist Mark Feldman still may be one of the music world's best kept secrets. That could change with this, his first album for ECM under his own name, on which he builds on his work with the Masada String Trio to further explore the intersections between classical music and jazz. Interacting at a high level with a distinguished international rhythm section--British pianist John Taylor, Swedish bassist Anders Jormin and American drummer Tom Rainey--Feldman gravitates with supreme subtlety from airy lyrical statements to playful swing rhythms ("Ink Pin" is a particular delight) to works of a searching intensity. Some of his compositions, including the 20-minute opener, "Arcade," make demands the casual listener may not be up to. But though his virtuosity is never flashy, you may find yourself getting carried away by it all the same. --Lloyd Sachs

Product Description
This album showcases Mark Feldman not only as a supremely gifted violinist but also as an extraordinary composer. The quartet was especially assembled for this session and the music tailored for the individual talents of this particular cast. English pianist John Taylor plays with characteristic resourcefulness and elegance, and the powerful, driving rhythm team consists of ECM veteran Anders Jormin and drummer Tom Rainey, here making his ECM debut.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great emotional depth, January 24, 2007
I listen to all kinds of music, and in every genre I have a few favorite recordings. Mark Feldman's "What Exit" is now on that list. These are all Feldman's compositions, and I wonder what kind of charts he brought to the recording studio, how detailed they were? There is a strong musical vibe going between himself and John Taylor (piano), Anders Jormin (double-bass),and Tom Rainey (drums), and the improvisation of each of the musicians goes well beyond technique. The music has a feeling of great emotional depth without being ponderous or overly intellectualized. If you are not used to listening to music based on the full chromatic scale, hearing it may take a little bit of practice, but this album is a great place to start introducing yourself a beautiful way of playing, which is essential to jazz and modern music. The feeling is mostly meditative, but with a fluid intensity and clarity which held my interest throughout. The music never seemed to go out of focus or drop into formulas. The first cut, "Arcade", over twenty minutes long is a tour de force. The other cuts are shorter, but no less strong. Feldman has played on many recording and is a virtuoso in a wide range of styles, but in my opinion, with this work he's really onto something very personal.
