4.0 out of 5 stars Sebastian's Highest Charting Solo Album, February 21, 2007
John Sebastian left the immensely popular Lovin' Spoonful in 1968, and in early 1970 released his first solo album. But despite a hugely successful (although unscheduled) appearance at the Woodstock Festival, it didn't transfer to huge sales for his self-titled solo debut. The album peaked at No. 20 (the best showing of any of his solo releases) and the single that had been released in advance of the album, "She's a Lady," barely cracked the Hot 100 at No. 84.

Despite the lack of sales, the album was a critical success in spite of the record label hassles upon its release. [MGM still claimed the Spoonful owed them an album and using second-generation tapes, issued an identical competing version of the album officially released by Warner/Reprise!] Here's a run-down on the tracks:

"Red Eye Express" - This ode to the rigors of travelling on the road is an upbeat tune that wouldn't have been out of place on a Spoonful album. Sebastian adds harmonica and Dallas Taylor plays drums. [In fact, Taylor is the only drummer on this album.]

"She's a Lady" - This is a lovely ballad about Sebastian's first wife. He is joined on guitars by Stephen Stills and David Crosby. At 1:43, it is by far the shortest track.

"What She Thinks About" - An upbeat horn-driven track with Graham Nash on harmony vocals.

"Magical Connection" - A jazzy number with samba overtones. Buzz Linhart plays vibes.

"You're a Big Boy Now" - Just John and his guitar doing a solo version of an old Spoonful song originally done for a movie of the same name.

"Rainbows All Over Your Blues" - The title may have been a reference to John's tie-dye personna, but with Buddy Emmons on pedal steel it has a very definite country groove.

"How Have You Been" - John has said that the inspiration for this song was when he returned to his home in Long Island (that was being looked after by some friends with young children) after having been in California.

"Baby Don't Ya Get Crazy" - This is a cheery, uptempo number with Stephen Stills on lead guitar and the Ikettes singing harmonies.

"The Room Nobody Lives In" - Except for a bass player, the only other instrument used on this track is Sebastian playing a harmonium. It's a somber, moody piece.

"Fa-Fana-Fa" - Of all the songs on this album that evoke his former band, this one reminds me of the quirky songs that Zal Yanovsky did. The song's only lyrics provide the title. Yes, the song is a bit goofy, but it's fun!

"I Had a Dream" - The lyrics to this one may not have dated well, but it certainly expresses Sebastian's utopian world view at the time.

Along with TARZANA KID, this is the best of Sebastian's solo career. Any fan of the Lovin' Spoonful will find much to enjoy here. [Running Time - 31:59] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

(REAL NAME)
I bought this CD for one song. I bought the original album when it came outon vinyl and was so impressed by Buddy Emmons' steel guitar playing on "Rainbows All Over Your Blues" that I bought it on CD for that single song. It's John Sebastian and Buddy Emmons at their best. It's a must-have for me!
