5.0 out of 5 stars Friends making wonderful music, February 24, 2008
By misster (Liverpool, NY United States) - See all my reviews
According to the liner notes, this was recorded by Jimmy Bruno and two of his good musician friends in Mr. Bruno's home studio and was done in complete takes, without editing. A wonderful idea---three superb players having what had to have been great fun making great music and letting us listen in! And all but one of the songs was written by the players themselves; the other is vibist Tony Micelli's arrangement of a Bach Trio Sonata. I hope they do this again and I wish other musicians of this calibre would do the same. The music is enjoyable and accessible even though it's complicated; you can kick back and chill but you will be rewarded if you pay attention. This CD is worth tracking down. Why isn't it more readily accessible? And if you like this you should also take the trouble to track down a CD Mr. Bruno did with bassist John (now Jennifer) Leitham titled "Two for the Road". Also a "difficult" but fun to listen to CD. But, again, one of the best things about "Maplewood Avenue" is the sense of "listening in" while superb musicians have fun together.
