Editorial Reviews

Product Description

CHRIS DIFFORD is a man of many parts, and all of them are working. In 2008, one of England s great pop lyricists of the past 30 years is ready for the solo spotlight again. The Last Temptation Of Chris is an early contender for album title of the year, but much more than that, it's an outstanding showcase for a songwriting talent reaching new levels of maturity. The Last Temptation Of Chris is Difford's follow-up to his widely admired solo debut of late 2002, I Didn't Get Where I Am. It expands on that record s delightfully intimate writing style, this time in the company of another master craftsman, Boo Hewerdine, who co-wrote and produced the album. The Ivor Novello Award-winning Difford continues to run his own songwriting workshops and pass on the benefit of his weighty experience as a dyed-in-the-wool songman. Now, Chris rises to the fresh challenge of a new solo record, to be backed by extensive tour dates with Hewerdine, the man behind such enduring songs as the Bible s Graceland and Honey Be Good and his own Patience Of Angels, covered by Eddi Reader. And Difford is justifiably proud of the way it turned out. It s an extension of the first album, which I did with Francis Dunnery, he says. The idea was to carry on where I left off. Thankfully I met Boo and he guided me, he writes such beautiful melodies. He used to come to my house every day with a different batch of melodies, and before we knew where we were, we had an album. It s lovely to create something as intimate and warm as this with someone like Boo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Greatness, May 30, 2009
By Hastings Wolfe "Provocateur" (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
Yes, I'm an old-time Squeeze fan...been buying their stuff since "Cool For Cats".

Ironically, that has nothing to do with this review. Squeeze fans will like it for the simple reason that if you appreciate great songwriting you will appreciate this record. But it really doesn't sound like Squeeze. And that's just fine.

When I saw "Chris Difford solo album", my first thought was "Uh-oh...is this 45 minutes of 'Here Comes That Feeling'?" (If you know that old Squeeze number, you'll know what I mean...back then Chris kind of just belted out a drunk-sounding baritone). In reality, his singing is beautiful, quiet and understated. Reminds me a lot of Stephen Duffy (The Lilac Time) actually.

Great mood to the record. Has that middle-aged wisdom to it...kind of in Bob Dylan's "Modern Times" mode.

Funny, clever lyrics...catchy music...beautiful singing. -Sigh- A++ Chris!!

3.0 out of 5 stars I Want To Like This, February 4, 2009
Chris Difford represents one half of the Difford/Tilbrook team that wrote most of the great Squeeze hits. As a songwriting duo, they were strong contributors to the 80s array. However they have not managed to reach the same success level as individual solo artists. Where I admire Chris's lyrical work, he lacks something as a solo artist. I am a huge Squeeze fan and even seeing him live solo, there is something missing in this material. I think he really thrives for the songwriting chemistry of Tilbrook. I really want to love this disk...

4.0 out of 5 stars Difford Delivers, September 26, 2008
Fans of Difford's work with Squeeze will not be disappointed with this release. If you like Squeeze songs like "His House Her Home" or "Slaughtered, Gutted & Heartbroken" you will enjoy this collection. A few of the tracks tend to sound similar, hence the reason for 4 stars and not five. Still, cuts from the cd like "Fat As a Fiddle" and "Come on Down" offer proof that this half of the famous Difford/Tilbrook Squeeze team is quite cabable on his own.
