Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Jazz trumpeter Corey Wilkes burst on the Chicago jazz scene in 2002. This is his debut as a leader. Corey took on the ghost of Lester Bowie and filled the vacant seat in the Art Ensemble of Chicago. His soulful notes can be heard gracing a variety of projects such as DJ sets by Logic, Osunlade and Josh Deep; tracks on Hidden Beach's Unwrapped Vol. 4, also recorded with Roscoe Mitchell, Art Ensemble, Tortoise, Ernest Dawkins, Nicole Mitchell and Ethnic Heritage Ensemble's Hot 'N' Heavy CD & DVD. With Chelsea Baratz, tenor sax; Jabari Liu, alto sax; Robert 'Baabe' Irving III, piano and Fender Rhodes; Junius Paul, bass; Jeremy 'Bean' Clemmons, drums.

3.0 out of 5 stars A decent debut album, August 17, 2008
By A. Gillette (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Corey Wilkes is an ambitious, modern trumpet player with projects ranging from jazz to hip-hop, including a stint with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. On this album, however, the tracks are a mixed bag and border on smooth jazz on more than one occasion (esp. tracks 2, 3, and 6) and I have a hard time getting into his rather oblique styles. Still, the omnipresent electric bass in the background on many of the tracks are reminiscent of Herbie Hancock's sound - try Remy's Revenge (tk 4) or Return 2 Sender (tk 7) for that kind of loose, groovy feel. The soulful vocals on Funkier than a Mosquita's Tweeter (tk 10) are lively and impressive; the spoken word from track 1 is less entertaining. All around, a decent debut album from this rising star.

3.0 out of 5 stars contemporary, August 16, 2008
This was a nice debut CD. It was very contemporary. I'm a lover of the old masters and their soothing tunes. I purchased this CD because I saw Corey three times in person and was impressed with his stage performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT MUCH GOOD MUSIC HERE !, October 20, 2008
Music not very good, being a Chicagoan and a great fan of Corey I was disappointed in the music selections he played. He is far too telented to play the garbage he recorded .
