Editorial Reviews

About the Artist

Luke Reynolds, former Blue Merle frontman, returns as Pictures And Sound with a self-titled debut album on Vanguard Records. In 2005, Reynolds found success with Blue Merle's well-received album and smash hit, Burning In The Sun. Blue Merle has since parted ways allowing Pictures And Sound to flourish. Reynolds, who played a dozen instruments on the Pictures And Sound album including pedal steel, guitars and keyboards, is joined by his friends Dave Wilder (Macy Gray, Liz Phair) on bass and Pete McNeal (Jem, Z-Trip, Ricki Lee Jones) on drums, to create an album that is modern in its arrangements and soundscapes yet a throw back to an era when songs were written and recorded in a more organic atmosphere.

Product Description

Luke Reynolds writes 'This is the blog for my band, Pictures And Sound. We just finished recording our debut record produced by Jacquire King (Modest Mouse, Tom Waits, Kings Of Leon). The band is: Me, Luke Reynolds (Blue Merle, $olal, Brett Dennen), Dave Wilder on bass (Macy Gray, Ghostface Killer) and Pete McNeal on drums and percussion (Jem, Guru, Redman). Besides writing, producing, recording (and the traveling that goes along with all three), big ups to: mountains, coffee, winter, fall, Motown, reading, snowboarding, hip hop, art, artic exploration, dub, Obama, dogs and vintage hoodies.'

4.0 out of 5 stars It would be better without Willie . . ., March 26, 2009
I liked Blue Merle and accidentally stumbled upon this disc on Amazon. It's one of those CDs that took several listens before I was sure I liked it, but it has really grown on me. The songs are cleverly written, and I like the variation of sound and tempo. The only song I don't care for is the one with Willie Nelson (I don't like him or his voice), but I have to say that the lyrics are good. I have really been enjoying this disc!

5.0 out of 5 stars the new definition of classic, August 19, 2008

(REAL NAME)
Having discovered this project just after recording was finished, and following Luke Reynolds heartfelt-without-hype blog with anticipation of the release, I can say with confidence that this is one of the best examples of songwriting and sound I've heard on one record since I bought my first copy of Jackson Browne's debut "Saturate Before Using". The balance is stunning. These musician's musicians read other like books and hold each other up to the light on every track. I hope it will be released on vinyl as well. I'll keep it in my "must have" collection along with Browne, Emmylou Harris' "Roses in the Snow", and Paul Simon's "Graceland".
This is what music can return to, if we slow down long enough to really, really listen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Please go back to Blue Merle, October 14, 2008
By FoxxMouldr "Foxx" (French Lick, IN) - See all my reviews
I was very disappointed in this CD. Blue Merle was one of my top 5 favorite bands so I was very much looking forward to hearing this new collaboration. Needless to say the frontman needs to go back to Merle before he ruins his career.
