Arielle Schultz- best book ever!, March 3, 2005
Welcome to New York's Upper East Side. The sun is always shining, which makes it another perfect day to shop. Not that any other day would be a bad one. You're The One That I Want, a Gossip Girls novel by Cecily von Ziegesar, is an incredibly well written book that tells the life stories of a high school senior, Blair Waldorf, and all of her Upper East Side friends.
As college applications start to arrive, and the word gets around, gossip builds up as the stakes are raised and friendships are put to the test. For example, the friendship between the threesome that's been together forever, Blair, Serena, and Nate. Ever since the 4th grade Blair has had her heart set on Yale, and even named her new baby sister after the university. Despite these wishes, she completely blew both of her chances to get in, and is losing sleep at night from her nerves. Without her knowing, her on and off boyfriend Nate decided what the heck, and applied to Yale too. Also not even thinking about it was her best friend Serena when she decided to apply. College application day arrives, and Blair and Serena decide to open theirs together. Big mistake. Soon after their friendship will go downhill, but now, once again will they be able to pull it back up?
But hey, who cares about college when you have a love life to look after? Nate and Blair have been dating on and off since anyone can remember, and if you don't think they'll end up married, you're in the minority.
One part of the book that really stuck out to me was when Blair was at Georgetown checking out the college and getting a tour from a girl named Rebecca and her little posse of three other bleached blonde girls that do EVERYTHING together. So that night they get Blair really drunk, and all five of them agree that Blair should be in their little "club". In order to be in this club though, you have to let the current members shave your legs and you have to die your hair blonde. Blair, although a gorgeous brunette, was drunk enough to let them do this to her, and realized in her morning hangover what a mistake she had made. Just goes to show you what can happen to you when you're drunk!
The Gossip Girls are serial books that any girl of any age can relate to because of the little phases that each girl goes through, mainly Blair. Friendship problems, boys, and self consciousness are all things that every girl goes through, no matter how rich you are, and Gossip Girls is here to show us just that.

As usual, scandal and gossip never end in NYC..., October 12, 2004
Personally, I think this was the best book of the series so far...but I think I'm just getting a bit tired of the series. Cecily von Ziegesar's first two books were excellent but after that I think she just started narrowing the time frame between each book in order to prolong the series (in other words, make more $$$). Apparently there are going to be 8 gossip girl books-I think that it could have been done in 6 books.
#5, I like it like that, was probably the worst book of the series. It had no point at all, despite one of the best looking covers! But no.7 (Nobody does it better) also looks fantastic, with a lime green cover, and will be coming out in April? 2005.
This book is pretty good, full of unexpected twists. ***I don't want to spoil too much** but Blair's sister is born and Blair acts all cute with her. Vanessa gets two new roommates. Serena, as usual, is beautiful and mysterious and hooks up with different guys. Aaron isn't too much in the picture, which is disappointing. Chuck and his monkey aren't either. Nate is still the pothead he always was, and Jenny and Dan try out new gigs.
Overall, best book of the series though. There are a LOT of changes (as someone mentioned, probably within a 2 week time)...so make sure to read this one!
Plus, the movie is coming out next year!

Starts off a high speeds, but soon looses steam., February 25, 2006
I had jumped right into Gossip Girl #6, after finishing #5 "i like it like that". I had high expectations after the hard-to-put-down last book in the series.
It started off at a good pace, with Vanessa starting her new movie, Blair, Serena and Nate going through the troubles of college. Dan being his emo self, trying to win V back while enjoying his college acceptance. Then Jenny, who is off trying to become a model. Then the book started to fall, about half way through.
Blair had acted not quite as I would have expected, moping around because of her wait listing into Yale. While I felt like von Ziegesar had lost what she had with the characters V and D. They seemed to of acted out of character with how they had been written before. Doing things I didn't feel quite comfortable seeing them do. Jenny was just running around wanting to be a model, while Nate and Serena seemed like the only characters to really stay in character. By the end, it seemed like V's movie had lost it's purpose and the characters had no where else to go.
Overall, it was an enjoyable read. I will keep reading the story, but after this book I just wonder what else can be done with these characters. Nate and Blair have finally done -it- and the final college decisions need to be made. I'm interested to see where von Ziegesar takes these characters next, and hope she reclaims herself with book #7.
