Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up–Patricia Kelley is the bold heroine of this 18th-century seafaring saga. Left with debts after her father's death, the teen leaves her English boarding school to claim her Barbados plantation. She stows away on a merchant ship, but is soon discovered and threatened with expulsion at the nearest port. The ship's surgeon intervenes and she becomes skilled as a nurse, but finds joy only in her nightly visits on deck when she wears sailor's clothes and learns to climb the ropes. She longs to be with Brian Dalton, the bosun's mate, but he is beneath her socially. In Barbados, Patricia finds that she has no home, and she agrees to the surgeon's marriage proposal. Part two depicts their growing relationship and the work they do to combat yellow fever. Part three finds Patricia a penniless widow and shipwreck victim. Disguised as a man, she signs on as an assistant surgeon on a frigate bound for battle in Havana and is reunited with Brian. Though much of the novel is plot driven, Collison does an excellent job of allowing her protagonist to develop. At first she is fairly unlikable, which is true to her character, but ultimately she matures and becomes free of the shackles of convention. Historical details are smoothly woven into the story, and a historical note and bibliography are appended. Readers who enjoyed Avi's The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle (HarperCollins, 1992) will find a more substantial, mature story here to captivate them again.–Cheri Dobbs, Detroit Country Day Middle School, Beverly Hills, MI

From Booklist

After the death of her father, an English gentleman who had never married her mother, Patricia must leave the boarding school where she has lived for 10 years. Penniless but determined to claim her father's estate in Barbados, she stows away on a ship bound for the Caribbean. Though her plans go awry, Patricia discovers friendship, romance, marriage, love, danger, courage, self-reliance, and the satisfaction of a useful trade. She finds her soul mate early in the story, but because he cannot support her, she must accept the proposal of a man she does not love. A recurring theme is Patricia's dressing as a man, first for the freedom of climbing the ship's rigging and later for the necessity of earning her living in a man's profession. Collison's research shows--not just in the appended author's note and the glossary but also in details of mid-eighteenth-century birth control and life as a ship's surgeon. Told in the first person, this seafaring saga features a heroine who longs for both independence and love. Link this to Tanith Lee's Piratica (2004). Carolyn Phelan

5.0 out of 5 stars A different story of a different heroine, June 24, 2007
By Lesley West (St James, Western Australia) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Patricia Kelly is one determined young lady. Left an orphan in England she smuggles herself aboard a ship bound for the West Indies, determined to secure the inheritance she is confident that she has been promised and that will ensure her future life is happy and comfortable. But of course we all know that the course of such tales rarely runs smoothly, and in the process Patricia finds herself in all manner of unlikely adventures.

This is a stirring story for anyone of any age, though I can imagine it would particularly resonate in the hearts of adventurous teens. Patricia sails the high seas, assists the ship's surgeon in the aftermath of battle, is shipwrecked, finds love, loses love and finds it again. In case this seems a little far fetched, there are many historical instances of women undertaking similar adventures on board ships at the time - usually without recognition, but they were there all the same. And I imagine they were every bit as feisty as our heroine Patricia.

This book is told in clear, first person prose (which I am usually not fond of as I am nosy and like to know what the other characters are thinking), but it suits this rollocking tale. It is historically accurate (and inaccuracy is my pet peeve) and is not burdened with excessive romance which mars many a similar tale. It really is a very good read! And unusually for tales of this ilk (and this is NOT a spoiler) the ending is very satisfying.

And, as a plus, even though one should never judge a book by its cover, it has the most sensational cover art work; which reflects the great tale within, and certainly captures the spirit of our heroine.

Highly recommended for any young lady in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventures await the reader!!!!, May 18, 2007
By mindy (denver, co United States) - See all my reviews
What a refreshing alternative to the ever so popular and run of the mill novels that overflow the bookstore shelves today! And who says this is for young adults only? If you are not a YA but you are looking for something different than the unbearably predictable stories of the romantically challenged, thirty-something professional woman whose life is in a crisis of some sort or another, then Star-Crossed is the book for you! This book has real content and is filled with historical curiosities, high-seas adventures and, yes, even a little romance.

Don't let the 18th century language throw you. As you begin to read it you will find it is an easy read and, in fact, the sea bearing jargon is exactly what makes each character colorful and distinct... and wholly believable.
It has a rich and vibrant plot that will leave you wanting to read more adventures of Patricia Kelly. Is there a sequel yet??

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Historical Seafaring Fiction, September 9, 2008
Star-Crossed is an excellent and historically accurate seafaring novel. The story, told in first person, is the account of Patricia Kelley, a young girl who is orphaned, broke, and alone. She stows away upon a ship bound for Barbados where her father's plantation awaits her to claim, if only she can get there. Although Patricia is discovered as a female stowaway very early on in the novel, she continues to frequently dress as male for freedom and for self preservation. For those who like a little romance, Patricia develops a relationship with a Brian Dalton, a bosun's mate, but they are star-crossed lovers, as the title suggests. The story is very dark and gritty at times, Collison does not spare the disgusting details of ship life, and Patricia's experiences are not sugar coated and sweet, but this only enhances the novel. Fans of Patrick O'Brien, Avi's: The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, and L. A. Meyer's Bloody Jack series will enjoy immensely.
