Product Description
Alice's sister, Mayura Seno, is under the control of Darva, dark mistress of the Maram Words--and Alice and Kyo Wakamiya are the only two people who have a chance of saving her from the dark side! Can they become masters of the Lotis Words in time to save her? With Mayura's power over the Maram words rapidly growing stronger, it seems almost all hope is lost...until Alice and Kyo meet some powerful new allies!

About the Author
A manga artist for over ten years, Watase's debut came in 1989 at the age of 18 when her short story PAJAMA DE OJAMA (An Intrusion in Pajamas) appeared in the monthly Shojo Comic manga anthology. Since then she has written and drawn some 50 volumes worth of different short stories and long-running manga series, including the fantastically popular FUSHIGI YUGI, also available in English from VIZ. Her works have provided the basis for two television series, an OVA series, anime soundtrack CDs, and a string of novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crazed Wakamiya Fangirl, July 4, 2004
A Kid's Review
While Viz is exceptionally slow at translating manga, I am glad volume 5 has come out in English for all of us to read.

This volume, by the way, features Chris, the Lotis Master partially seen in volume 4, as the cover, and is indeed called "Jealousy".

The title, I think, is aimed towards Mayura Seno, who, in this volume, is being eaten alive by the Mistress of the Maram words, Darva. (Due to contoversy, I'd like to mention Darva is female, at least in the English volume)

Since I don't want to spoil the volume, I'll just skim over it. Kyo & Alice move out, and Mayura (who has been completely possessed at this point) aims to do anything to get Kyo, hurt his family, hurt her family, & manipulate people.

Somewhere in this series Alice & Kyo become more open with their romantic feelings & have to deal with it when Kazuki, Kyo's friend, tramatically hurts Alice.

Kyo learns of the branded "mudoru" curse from Billy, one of two Lotis masters who have come to aid the others. They are the last ones who can help Alice & Kyo.

The volume ends when Alice & co approach the Tokyo Metropolitian Building, ready to face Mayura.

On a lighter note, Alice knows 6 Lotis words, Kyo, 5. There is a bio of Frei & a VERY cute picture of Nyozeka. It's a must buy for all shoujo fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars Alice 19th is nearing a great climax..., July 10, 2004
By Angela K. Simon "angie-chan" (Marysville, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This volume of Alice 19th is as great as the others. Chris is in it a ton more, which is wonderful, because I love him, and the ending of this volume gives you the feeling that big things are to come, such as the showdown with Mayura and the Mara words. I'm really bummed out that this series only has 7 volumes...I hope Alice and Kyo do a lot more learning, or else they're gonna be screwed (...) Two new (and from what it sounds like, perhaps the final) Lotis Masters join Alice, one from America named Billy, (who is sadly a massively stereotyped character) and one from China, only I forget her name (...) The Chinese Lotis Master will be on the cover of the 6th book, so look out for her!

The bottom line: Don't miss this if you're reading the series! You're going to want to know what happens next! If you haven't read the other Alice 19th books yet, you definitely should so that you know what's going on (...)

3.0 out of 5 stars DARKNESS IN THE FAMILY, March 4, 2005
Unable to take over the souls of Kyo and Alice, the dark forces of Darva and the Maram Masters instead target their friends and family. Enshrouded in evil, Mayura begins to be devoured by her powers, even as her minions take her form and inspire homicidal jealousy in Kyo's friend, Kazuki. You see, he loved Mayura, and fueled by Maram, he feels great anger because Kyo kicked her to the curb. So he sets out to hurt his two former friends.

Alice 19th has always suffered from Yu Watase's inability to balance drama and humor. For instance, one of the characters dies and on the next page we have a super-distorted Alice in a scene of slapstick and then back to a tragic death in the next panel. Over and over in this series, moments of dramatic power have been undone and destroyed by Yu-Gi-Oh humor. It's a real shame because it keeps Alice 19th from achieving anything above the average. It's like having a song and dance number in Shindler's List at some points.
