Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Artist Wayne Thiebaud does a terrific job of showing kids how a single line upon the page eventually becomes a full-fledged drawing of an ice cream cone by using volume, shape, and the feeling of movement. But cartoonist Matt Groening is the highlight of this half-hour tape as he chats about his early beginnings while showing viewers how he makes Bongo the bunny move on paper. The Simpsons creator claims his cartoon design is based on his fifth-grade ability, while his background style is based on his first-grade skills, thus inspiring grade-school viewers and perhaps a few of their parents. Penn and Teller's visual comedy and a cowboy's poetic demonstration of how a line--his lariat--makes motion round out this installment of the series originally aired by PBS. --Kimberly Heinrichs

5.0 out of 5 stars Behind the Scenes is a wonderful series!, March 15, 2006

Behind the Scenes is a wonderful series, with engaging and thoughtful presentations of the arts - I wish that more were produced. Each video presents a key concept and depicts an artist employing it in their work. While the target audience is older, my 3 year old who loves making art, is a big fan. Thiebaud is a great example for young artists, given his mastery of craft combined with simple yet appealing subject matter.

1.0 out of 5 stars too short, for kids, November 21, 2004
although somewhat entertaining, this video by no means is a "behind the scenes" expose of mr. wayne thiebaud. there is probably 6 to 8 minutes worth of video that shows thiebaud drawing. the video is less than a half hour long. there is a short enjoyable clip of matt groening drawing. but this video is not worth $15.00.
