Bizarre Fantasy, October 11, 2008
Bizarre book of illustrations, picturing Duke Snider (AKA The Duke of Flatbush, a Brooklyn/ Los Angeles Dodgers', New York Mets', San Francisco Giants' baseball player, 1947-64) in various absurd & historical & momentous situations (with The Marx Bros., Moliere, Pallas Athene, etc.). Some nudity. Absurdist humor like the Forrest Gump film, but 14 years earlier. Why author/illustrator Dejasu would pick The Duke as his subject is beyond me, & the fact that The Duke was the greatest player in baseball during the decade of the 1950s would seem to be irrelevant here, but perhaps that is the point. Some of the illustrations/captions alternately made me smile, frown, or just shrug my shoulders in wonderment. Very difficult to locate a copy, but well worth it.

A spectacular art book, August 6, 2008
I was so surprised to find this book on Amazon.com. This rare artist's book (published by The Visual Studies Workshop Press) is the work of a wonderful artist and poet named Lee Dejasu. It's a bit indescribable, except to simply say, the beautifully illustrated story/poem tracks the wonderous (fictional, I think) occurrences of the Brooklyn Dodger Duke Snider... while also playing with seemingly random characters and events from ancient and modern histories, old movies, everyday life, and the circus(among other things). As an example, here's a quote from pages 24,25 and 26: "Duke Snider frozen in block of ice, being examined by Russian scientists. Chico Marx, Duke Snider, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire journeying through ruins. Duke at his potter's wheel." By the end of the book, I feel our hero (Snider) is at once a character of great mystery and importance, and a regular guy. Kinda like we all want to be, I guess... It's a lovely artwork, a visual poem, and very rare book.
