If you have a live.com or Outlook.com acct, skydrive offers slightly less functional, but usable, versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Chris Lewis is correct. There are Web versions available with a skydrive or outlook account, but they are not the full version. I'd venture the vast majority of people would be fine though.

As far as I know there is just the Google Docs office app. With that you can edit word processing doc offline, but only view spreadsheet offline. It has some compatibility with Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office is available online through Skydrive- BUT only for Windows and Mac OS (maybe iOS)- not Chrome.

Alas, no. They can be opened -- but it is so much less functional in the Google Docs versions.
