I Think you're alone in saying that their songwriting has declined since Risk. Risk was the low point for Megadeth and each album since has been a steady incline back to form, and United Abominations is the return to form.
Yeah the lyrics are there but the music just plain sucks. Whats even worse. I agree with most of the lyrics "Amerikhastan" and "United Abominations". The last megadeth that was actually heavy was world needs a hero which apparently was a fluke considering the albums before and after it.
In some ways I hear you. I'm amazed the album is being praised, it's really not very strong. I think it's better than Risk, but honestly, I thought the last album was much better. Some of the lyrics are just silly. "Set Me Free" doesn't belong. I feel the album starts off VERY strong and then just kinda slips.
If you don't like first five songs, you dont like metal,so listen to Britney Spears. As I'm typing this "no one is safe, when i close my eyes" is playing in my head. Hey Metallica whant to have Dave Mustaine back?
okay, I am going to try and be objective here. look around the metal scene and tell me who DOESN'T sound like Megadeth these days (especially Trivium!). Naturally, some of you feel bored with megadeth, dark tranquillity etc. even though you are not only getting consistent quality, but when it comes to megadeth...you have to listen to it: 1. on a good stereo, 2. at lest 4 times and not as your taking a dump or talking to your girlfriend music, but actually focusing on what you hear. then you will discover how truly innovative this cd is. i have done it-i dismissed about 5 cds on the first spin and REFUSED to revisit them (including this one and last dark tranquillity and machine head productions), but changed my mind in every case and thankfully, because i would be missing a lot of good stuff...I think a lot of you want catchy, melodic stuff of rust, countdown or youthanasia, but dave even said in the interview that this was going to be a mix of so far so good and between rust and countdown megadeth sound, and it is. no, it is not an easy album, it has lots of twisted short and stop riffing, southern rock, and a lot more thrash than any other album with the exception of rust and peace. is it better? no, probably not, but it's just as good, it's not rust, not countdown, not youthanasia, but it's definitely good, real megadeth i have fallen in love with since rust and countdown, which i was afraid i have lost on risk. the hero and the system were both chaotic and half-way there, but on this one he has finally arrived again. listen to the title track or gears of war, don't you hear countdown influence? what about washington's next-hangar 18 meets in my darkest hour- anyone?, sleepwalker-all rust AND peace etc. the problem with having over 20 years of musical history on your tale is that you must strike a balance between your signature sound and innovation and then encase it in modern setting. not everyone can do it, and i believe megadeth is still doing it, while sellautica lags behind bleeding profusely...
I agree that this album is very dissapointing. It is a major step back from TSHF in terms of songwriting, musicianship, and overall creativity. I think this is on the same level as Risk and TWNAH, and like those albums I will be selling it to the local music store. Hopefully he will turn it around in the future, after being burned by three of his last four albums, i will be hesitant to buy any future releases.
I agree. While there are some great riffs on the album, the rest is lacking. The album has an uninspired feel to it. While Risk was a lowpoint, I loved The System Has Failed. This is a step back in my opinion though. It seems that Dave was more concerned with trying to make the album sound like "old school" Megadeth than with trying to craft a great album. The style and feel is just forced. The lyrics are also subpar. The subject matter is fine, but how it is written just doesn't seem to flow well. I enjoyed the album, but after the great System Has Failed, I was expecting better. I would rather have Dave craft an album that is inspired and fresh than one that he thinks the fans want instead. The true fans want Dave to be himself musically, not try and recreate past styles and feelings. Metallica made the same mistake with St. Anger and it sounded forced there as well. People change over the years and it is expected for their musical styles and inspirations to change as well. You can tell when someone is following what they truly want to do musically, as it sounds hollow and forced. Even Risk, which I don't care for, at least sounded like it was created from Mustaine's musical desires at the time. UA just sounds like he is forcefully trying to make Rust In Peace 2.0 and it just won't work. He'll never record another Rust In Peace, although I do believe an album resides inside him that is completely different but just as good. Same goes for Metallica. They will never make another Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets.........but they do have the ability to craft an equally classic album if they put their minds to it. Forcing it out into something that it isn't meant to be is not the way to go though.
I agree. This is a very weak overblown effort from Mr. Mustaine. He has created a poor copy of a 1988 classic album and stripped all the soul and heart from it. He reused riffs from older records and older influences and barely disguises his theft... Vortex from CW and Never walk alone anyone? Gears of War... Metallica's end riff from Purify (same riff... note for note)? There is even reused riffs from TSHF mixed into the solos of Burnt Ice and You're Dead. And the biggest finger to the fans is the uninspired and poorly played redo of A Toute Le Monde. It won't take long for Dave to pass the blame for this subpar effort off like he did on Risk, TWNAH or TSHF.
This is the biggest con of his career (save that still alive... and well?). This is not the second coming of megadeth, I as a huge DV-8 owning, 7 time seeing them own every song and every version of every album fan, am hugely disappointed and done with Megadeth. Megadeth died in 2002 when Mustaine killed it and only now are we hearing the screeching death cries of this titan of rock.
All that, and he got the horses the horsemen of the Apocalypse wrong. Famine rides the white horse, and death rides the pale horse. This from a Born again too...
I actually like Risk (I'm very much in the minority there...no it's not very heavy but the songs are pretty catchy and well written) but my favorites are Youthanasia, Rust In Peace, and The System Has Failed (in that order). This new album is thematically arduous, musically uninspiring, and lyrically overbearing. I love Dave and have seen his band live 4 times over the years. After TSHF, I was very much anticipating this album but I've already become bored of it (that didn't even happen so quickly with TWNAH). The title track, Amerikhastan, and Tout Le Monde II are all ok but that's about it. IMHO, this is their weakest effort since SFSGSW. I have no idea how so many people think this is their best...it ranks 8th out of their 11 albums, IMHO.
I don't hate it, but this is far from being a masterpiece. "Sleepwalker" is for me the best song. "United Abominations" has great solos, but it's just more of the same and has no spontaneity -- as well as all the other songs on the album. I did like the female vocals on "A tout le monde". However, this album in my list is way below TSHF. Maybe some better solos could have saved it? I just don't know. Drover's got the chops and is an amazing player, but almost all his lead lines sound to me "stock shredding". :-( I confess I am a tad disappointed, yes.
I DONT AGRRE AT ALL TO ANY NEGATIVITY ABOUT THIS ALBUM.I CANT UNDERSTAND THE PEOPLE THAT SEEM SO HYPERCRITICLE ABOUT IT.YOU DONT LIKE THE SOLOS?DAVES MENACING VOCALS?I THINK IT IS VERY SIMILIAR TO COUNTDOWN,A MORE SOLID SOUND,GREAT LYRICS.HE TAKES TIME ON HIS VOCALS.SORRY IF YOU DONT LIKE IT,BUT IF YOU DONT YOU MUST NOT LIKE METAL TOO WELL.THERE ARE SO FEW BANDS THAT PLAY METAL ANY MORE[LET ALONE GOOD METAL] ALL THIS WHINING MAY TURN PEOPLE OFF OF METAL.NOT THAT I WOULD DEFEND GARBAGE[METALLICA,ETC...]IF THIS ISNT A SOLID METAL ALBUM I DONT KNOW WHAT IS.BEYOND MEGADETH I ONLY KNOW OF MAIDEN,ANTHRAX,AND DIO THAT CAN PRODUCE ANYTHING WORTHWHILE THESE DAYS.TURN ON YOUR RADIO IF YOU WANT TO HERE THE CURRENT GARBAGE THEY ARE PLAYING,ITS PITIFUL!I JUST CANT SEE WHERE THE COMPLAINTS ARE COMING FROM.
I don't think anybody is being hypercritical, and i don't think anybody mentioned not liking Daves "menacing" vocals. I find this album to be very boring, i've listened to it 10 times and the only track i can even recall from is a poor version of a good song. I also don't understand where the Countdown comparison is coming from, at least theres a few interesting songs on that album.
the not liking the vocals question was not meant to answer directly anything in particular, more of a whats not to like statement.the cmparison to countdown is coming from in my opinion the playing and the vocals on this one have the same i guess feel to them in regards to the extra focus it seems on getting the vocals more clear and the playing more refined, compared to most of the albums prior to countdown.i feel that had this album came out right before or after countdown that there would be far less criticism.though the negatives seem to be far outweighed by the positive on this one anyway.i guess as they say you cant please everybody all the time,it does seem that a lot of the negative comments are coming from people who have issues with previous albums[some were poor]and are looking for anything not right in theire opinion about this one.
I'm not sure why you're defending this album to the gills. Like J. Marshall said, it's very disappointing. I don't have any problems with Megadeth albums in general; the only one I truly don't like is KIMB and, in addition, SFSGSW and this one leave something to be desired. Other than that, I listen to and enjoy EVERY other Megadeth album to some degree. Forget what's good compared to Metallica; forget what's good compared to "metal"...compared to Megadeth's catalog, this album is sub par.
I know some people praise blindly their preferred bands and are unconditional fanboys. That's not my case nor the case of many guys posting on this thread. Conformism has no place in our books and thus we have the right of criticizing anything. Quality is not intrinsic to any genre of music. This means that even if an album is 100% true metal, that doesn't imply it is a masterpiece. So, we think the last release from Megadeth was not up to the hype and to me it's fair having such an opinion. Is it horribly bad? Of course not! But a masterpiece? No way!! So please, stop whining "you're not metal! you're not metal!" and be yourselves, become wiser and... grow!
i got on this post to see if the dissapointment was over some of the politcs on the album and was shocked to find outright bashing of this album, then there were some like i.munoz who was right on about the album being horrible or not,nor am i a fanboy[havent bought a megadeth album since risk, terrible]this is my #2or3 fav, megadeth album,i never heard any hype just happened to be surfing amazon trying to find something new that i like when i saw this one.which brings me to kyle ,as you can read on my first post my opinion of the bands that play good metal are far from the current wave of metal.i am very interested in finding bands that can play ,and vocally perform good metal, not the cookie monster vocals/scream rock, that seams to be the current trend, any band names that fit that mold that you could give me would be greatly appreciated.debating and bashing are not the same,if i didnt have a computer at home and could only go to the library where i couldnt haer the samples i may not have got this one if all i read was alot of these bashings, due to some of the latest albums from megadeth being not my cup of tea and i would be missing out on a good album, something i spend hours every week trying to find on here.
Greatest: Look, obviously everyone has their opinions but it seems to me that the people that like this album are trash metal fans who've found something decent and are heaping (too much) praise on it. The rest of us, who are Megadeth fans specifically feel this album pales in comparison to Dave's previous efforts. I don't care if it's metal or not. I'd take Risk over this album any day of the week. At least Risk was different. UA has "formula" written all over it.
thats probably because as time has changed so have you. ive noticed that with alot of people that dont get that with time you have different tastes, hell if some of their earlier stuff was put out today you might feel the same about that as well. just food for thought is all. I love these guys and no matter where I was when an album of theirs came out ie Bosnia, or wherever, they were there to take me away from all of the hoopla.
