Book Description

April 16, 2007
From its roots in the South Bronx over thirty years ago, hip-hop has swept across continents and oceans, shaping the music and mores of urban culture. It is more than just music. Hip-hop is a lifestyle that encompasses attitude, fashion, and a largely counter-Christian worldview. Transcending ethnic, geographic, generational, and economic barriers, hip-hop places one of the church's biggest mission opportunities right outside our windows. Un.orthodox equips church leaders and parents alike to understand and engage a culture that is as near as our schools, our communities, and even our homes. Author Tommy Kyllonen has seen hip-hop from the inside as a recording artist, as well as through the eyes of a pastor whose congregation has set the model for a groundswell of young urban churches focusing on hip-hop culture. Offering unique perspectives on the history, current state, and future of the hip-hop movement, Kyllonen shows what a hip-hop targeted ministry can look like in worship, outreach, evangelism, service, and discipleship. Using his own story as an example, Tommy shows how you can combine the hip-hop culture with faith.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'5-star rating....In this book, lead pastor Tommy Kyllonen (a.k.a. Urban D) equips church leaders to effectively engage the Hip Hop culture.' — Rick Warren's Ministry Toolbox

(Rick Warren's Ministry Toolbox )

'Author Tommy Kyllonen brings to light the importance of studying your surrounding community and reaching out to members of the community in a language they would understand. Any pastor reading this book would be enlightened about new ideas and finding encouragement, related not only to hip-hop but also to surrounding culture. With its three sections giving a broad overview of Kyllonen's journey to Crossover pastor, the history of hip-hop, and incorporating the church into its surroundings, Un.orthodox becomes a must-have on the bookshelves of any growing church.' — Publishers Weekly

(Publishers Weekly ) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally someone put into words the things stirring in my head for years., November 21, 2007
This review is from: Un.orthodox: Church. Hip-Hop. Culture. (Paperback)
I can finally share how I think with my friends and family by simply handing them a book.

This book takes a complex subject and makes it really easy to understand. It's also great to enjoy Urban D.'s heart.

Crossover Church in Tampa, FL should be studied by people wishing to impact today's culture.
