There is no reason this app should need my email or Facebook information...much less access to my friends list...it was a quick delete

App requires you to register with either an account with them or create one with your Facebook account. In either case it requires personal information and access to your friends list. There is no reason a note app should need all this personal info about you.

Uninstalled.

Developer Feedback: The Moral of the Story

It's obvious that effort went into developing NOTE BOARD, but due to a couple ill-considered choices, backlash occured during the Free App of the Day showcase.

First, poorly chosen application title. There are hundreds of traditional offline note takers and reminder apps with the same type of name. The choice of a such a prosaic name as NOTE BOARD has led to inevitable confusion with all the other offline apps that share similar "Note" names. Market research and clarity amongst the dozens, even hundreds, of similar named apps needs to be an influential factor. It would have been in the developer's best interest to have chosen a name more appropriate to this application's main use, online sharing and synching. Something like "SynchBoard"? A free one on me, guys.

The heavy preexisting use of "Note" in the Android-based market is what led to the abundance of "Share my what!?" review backlash. In my own case, I immediately understood the general online design and only had the side matter of not wanting to create an account, highlighting perhaps a design feature the developers could consider: allowing main program offline interactions, editing, etc and THEN prompt for registration when the user wishes to Synch. This would also have alleviated title confusion while maintaining the NOTE BOARD title.

Finally, and most important to me, is that ANY time a developer offers online storage in ANY form for an application, it is absolutely paramount that an EASILY accessible, PROMINENTLY displayed, CLEARLY formatted Privacy Policy is available at ANY registration prompt and DIRECTLY on the website. This practice alone makes the developer look professional as well as being legal.

When I downloaded this free app of the day it had no reviews. By the time I had the above reaction and uninstalled it (being unable to believe the developer would have created such an app and expect us to like it, I waited a bit), there were 9 negative reviews, each more articulate than this one. Some gave excellent details in their analysis. I wish I knew how to look for all the customer traps like that.

I did read the information before downloading. It seemed innocuous enough. Then Whammo! I was slammed in the face with this demand to "register" before I could use it. Bad idea, no way, it's not my idea of a good note app to broadcast information about my little life to the world for all to see, as if anyone cared. Too bad the developer is so enamored with that kind of social marketing concept. The app itself seemed attractively useful: a board, a place for an image, a place for some quick notes. I would have liked that, and was imagining using it.

Nifty idea but poorly executed. Requires registration or Facebook access. Many of the menu prompts are not even in English. Clunky UI and slow on s3.

[UPDATE: it appears that it isn't purely web-based after all, and instead the app keeps its data locally then syncs. So it's more than an interface to its website.]

Basically it is what the dev says: it is an Android interface to its website. In order to use this app you pay for, you must create an account on the dev's website. This involves giving him your email address. You MUST give it internet access to work!

Since it really is only web-based, what happens to your data if he goes out of business, or his server isn't up to snuff? The list goes on about why apps requiring a third-party server in order to function is so troubling.

To top it off, it has/wants your Facebook. No thank you.

The app itself is *very* buggy. Do *not* hit your back button on your phone or tablet! The app can't handle that, though at least sometimes it does ask if you want to exit.

The app seems interesting, and doesn't have any malware/adware except for the Facebook part, and it does prompt if you want to exit when you have hit BACK too many times. For these reasons it gets a second star.

Really, though, the app is still in Beta and relies on the developer's server. It's lucky to get the extra star, but I do reward not having malware/adware in an app.

When you download this app and start it then it wants you to log in with your email address and a password just to use it. It is mandatory that you do this. It includes Facebook code to use Facebook and asks you to sign in. It has permissions to access your device's locations provider and send you sticky broadcasts. These could be intents like spamming ads for businesses located around where you are at that time.

This type of information gathering is totally unnecessary for a simple notepad piece of software. I deleted this app immediately!

Permissions:
* read phone status and identity
* modify or delete the contents of your USB storage
* full network access
* view network connections
* Access extra locations provider commands. (These services allow applications to obtain periodic updates of the device's geographical location, or to fire an application-specified intent when the device enters the proximity of a given geographical location. Basically it can force ads to you of local businesses!)
* send sticky broadcast

It also contains code for Facebook access.
