OK well first I am a bass trombone player, but I thought it would be fun to learn alto trombone so I picked this up. The mouthpiece is small but not bad compared to the trumpet mouthpiece on a soprano bone, so all in all another good product from the conn company. I own a tenor pbone and other then the key and size difference it has the same tone quality as the pbone so it is a good horn to pick up and learn how to play alto trombone on.

Just a little loose on the slide, or rather the bar the slide 'slides' on--the part that should be fixed and immovable--not sure who to contact to resolve this. Otherwise--fun and just what we hoped for.

They list this as a "Trombone for Beginners". I am not sure it would work well for that. It is an Alto Trombone in the key of E flat. For a beginner to start of this and then switch to a B flat trombone does not seem like a good place to start. On the other hand, this pBone is an interesting way to try an Alto trombone. It works about as expected. If I play it in a "dead" room, I hear a sort of kazoo sound that others don't hear - I guess it is from the plastic close to my ear. In a live room I hear more of a normal trombone sound. Because this plays a 4th above a B flat trombone it might help my range on the B flat trombone.

It is fun and I find that I can either play music as if I am playing a B flat trombone (same slide positions) and everything comes out a 4th above, or with some mental effort I can play the real notes written which makes me use different slide positions.

I've played tenor trombone for six years, so I decided I'd give this instrument a try. I ordered it and I must say, the sound quality is pretty good considering the price tag. So far I've just read standard bass clef trombone music, so of course it sounds a fourth above a tenor trombone. I don't think it's appropriate for a person to start on, as the ability to play tenor is far more useful. However, to any experienced tenor trombonist I would say don't hesitate to give this instrument a shot. I've had no problems with it so far. My only complaint with it is the tiny plastic mouthpiece, which forces me to use much less air lest I overblow the instrument. Even though that might be necessary on an alto, I still find that I get a much better sound out of it with my 6 1/2 AL. It does compromise a few notes on the upper end of the range, but it gets far better sound quality. Overall, this instrument gets high praise and a definite recommendation from me.

Good trombone for casual use. It is a nice way to get a young kid into playing a brass instrument without the expense or the weight of a real one. Excellent for younger kids with shorter arms - If you have an older child (5th grade or above), then look to the tenor trombone size. If they are going to be in band, then get a real trombone and don't waist your time with this one, as your band director will want them to have a real brass instrument (at least most will). These are more novelty items or practice only instruments.

I'm a multi instrumentalist, but never have gotten into brass instruments.
when the pbone mini arrived, it's cardboard box felt like it was empty! It's that lightweight, easily carried by a 5yrs old's pinkie, without breaking a sweat.
I got the blue one, because i found it less intrusive.
i know they make them for kids, but i would have preferred a white, yellow, orange, or black one instead.

I never have played any brass instrument before, and the last trumpet i blew through, it sounded like a cow mooing...

This trombone out of the box was great to learn the base octaves on. I've learned embouchure in one day, and was able to form a relatively steady tone within the first 1.5 hours of arrival of the instrument (granted, i have some skills I took from saxophone).

I found that the second and especially third octave was much harder to play.

By default, the instrument is not very loud, but I've been able to get some brassy sounds out of it that would be loud enough to play in a band; though playing that loud would be torture on the lips.
the higher the notes, the harder it is to get the volume evened out with the lower notes.

It's not an easy instrument, and sometimes the note drops a 5th or 6th note when sliding, probably due to my bad embouchure control.

I haven't tried another mouthpiece on it yet, than the stock one, but the stock one works somewhat ok...

All in all its a fun way to start playing the trombone, but I would recommend to start with the full size for adults instead.

It doesn't come with grease, and chain lube doesn't work very well on it. Out of the box, i think the mini could use some grease, as there is some resistance felt when sliding.

I chose this item out of curiosity and to have an inexpensive alto trombone on which to work. I also wanted to consider its possible usefulness to young beginner trombonists.
I found the instrument to be of reasonable quality, aside from intonation issues.
The mouthpiece might be replaced with a regular small tenor mouthpiece, which I did after trying the plastic mouthpiece that came with it.
