Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-This contemporary classic loses nothing in its translation. Both text and illustration merge beautifully to captivate the attention of beginning readers. Carle's vibrant double-page collage illustrations fascinate, while Mlawer's translation retains the melodic quality of the original question-and-response text. The repetitive format of the book makes learning the names of the colors and animals an enjoyable experience. This fine-quality Spanish translation is an engagingly interactive read-aloud for both groups and one-on-one sharing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Treat for Spanish Speaking Pre-Schoolers, May 5, 2000
By
Yaneta S. Brown (Durham, North Carolina) - See all my reviews
Bill Martin's "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" is an early childhood classic, and this Spanish translation maintains all of the qualities that make it a hit with younsters. The captivating illustrations soothe even the most rambunctious of tots. The lyric repetition of language make it a natural for developing Spanish literacy or communication skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful addition to any Spanish Curriculum, March 6, 2006

This review is from: Oso pardo, oso pardo, ¿qué ves ahí? (Brown Bear and Friends) (Spanish Edition) (Board book)
I was wary of this book, because the more common Spanish term for "brown" in Texas (where we live) is cafe' or el color cafe.' But my students and children didn't miss a beat. As I read it - and it is VERY lyrical and sweetly repetitious, just as the English version is - the children simply adopted "pardo" as another way to say brown. What a wonderful way to introduce the fact that much of learning a second language is not always 1 to 1 - meaning, there are OFTEN many words that can mean similar ideas in the target language.

All that said, in addition to Flip Flop Spanish, my students and children all enjoy reading this book again and again, and are even sounding it out on their own - a first for many of them. Great confidence builder!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pardo/Cafe-Clarification, September 20, 2010
Many reviewers are commenting that they don't use the word "pardo" for brown in Spanish, so I wanted to clarify this point. Yes, the commonly used word for the color brown here in the US is "cafe" (with an accent, but I don't know how to do that online!). The word "pardo" also means brown, but we don't ever use it in our daily language. However, the authors wisely chose to use this word, because the proper name in Spanish for a "brown bear" is "oso pardo." As in the animal--not the color. Check it out on Wikipedia: [...]. This is a great vocabulary-building lesson for our Spanish-speaking children!

As a bilingual kindergarten teacher I LOVE this book, and so do my kinders! After reading it, we always make a class book with our pictures: "Juan, Juan, ?Quien ves ahi? Yo veo Mariana mirando a mi."
