4.0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is
Set consists of 4 flat profile widths of 3 grits 180, 260, 360. The handels are dipped rubber coating.

If you are looking for an inexpensive set of diamond flat files for crafting, hobby and light occasional use this set is great.

The files are flat on one side and have a slight pointed taper on the other side.

I used 2 of these...

2.0 out of 5 stars I should have noticed
There is grit on only the last 1 1/2" of the overall 7" length, which I should have noticed from the picture. These files are all rectangular cross section with 4 widths. The 3 grits are color-coded and labeled on the vinyl holder as 180, 260 and 360.

I used 2 of these files to debur aproximatly 60 nails for pinewood derby axles at a seminar that I held. The files showed no sign of wear.

Better performing than I thought they would be when I first opened the package.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheap and good, better than I expected, April 30, 2010

Its certainly not an expensive product, but better quality than they might have been for the price.

So far they have been used for filing/smoothing of soft metal with no trouble at all, with no apparent wear yet.
I don't expect them to last a long, long time (I would have got a more expensive set if I had) but they're doing a fine job so far.

The small handles can give a little cramp to bigger hands when used for longer periods, but that's not surprising.

This set of small diamond coated files seems to me to be a very good deal. They are of generic Chinese manufacture so you take a chance on quality and longevity. But at this price, to get 12 files,(3 sets of 4 with 3 different grits), who cares, you can just by another set. The files are all abount 7 inches long including a soft plastic dipped handle and roughly 2 inched of diamopnd coated file surface. I have used the files on some soft metal, revemoving mold remnants from plastic castings and my finger nails. In no case did the files show signs of wear. I would have rated them 5 stars but I have no long-term experience with them. While their construction quality is not the best, maybe it is as good as it needs to be because the files serve their purpose. I would recommend a set of these files for use in any home to take care of unwanted sharp points on kitchen or workshop tools or other items that just need a smoothing. They coold also be useful in sharping small knifes if you are careful to maintain the proper sharpening angle. I think they would wear out quickly in trying to bring an average or large size knife from a dull state to a very sharp state. But, these really are not for the purpose of sharpening knives. A large diamond coated shapening steel would be much better for that purpose. I doubt that you can lose buying a set of these files.

About what I expected for the price for a diamond file set. Works great on wood or ceramic work for fine detail.

Comparable to emery paper or sandpaper so only for use as a finishing file but does work well on stainless steel or tool steel.

I use these to touch up router bits. They arent bad, bit one of the files had what I assume was a diamond set higher than the rest. It made a high spot that made an uneven cut. It's located by one edge of the file. Now I just use the opposite edge and it works for most touch ups I do. For the price I still think I got a good deal. All the other files are great.

5.0 out of 5 stars They do what they're supposed to do, January 30, 2012

Now, first, let me mention that I gave these 5 stars based on them being $8 metal files. I rate things for what they are, not against all metal files in existence. If they didn't perform as I needed, I'd take off stars. My point is that I'm sure you can find pro-quality files that would be much more expensive, but I don't see how it's useful to make those apples-to-oranges comparisons.

As I said, I paid $8. I needed some small, light-duty metal files for hobby use, and so far these work perfectly fine. They offer a good range of sizes & grit and are pretty much what I expected.

I bought a set of these to adjust the timing in my black powder pistols. With the pistols being made of softer steel than modern guns, these files work wonderfully for the application. I have timed and smoothed the action of 4 guns now and can't tell the files show any wear, but for the price, I wouldn't have been disappointed if it had only fixed one gun. I'll definitely be recommending this product.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not So Great..., January 11, 2012

These files aren't quite what I was expecting - only half of the surface is a file section, but as I'll only be using them on a limited basis, I guess that's tolerable.
