4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent text, October 28, 2009
This is an excellent textbook, but a bit dated (the second edition was written in 1984). Being 25 years old, some of the data cited is out of date, but the basic science is still mostly relevant. The book begins with the deformation of metals and dislocation theory. This is then applied to the questions of deformation of metal single crystals with different crystal structures, the behavior of solid solutions and the effects of second phase particles. Annealing and the deformation of polycrystalline metals are then covered. Finally, there are discussions of creep, fatigue and fracture. The more specific the treatment (such as the deformation of particular alloys), the greater the problem with the age of the illustrative of the data. This is a particular problem when discussing creep, fatigue and fracture, as there have been significant advances in the last 25 years in how these phenomena are handled. Nonetheless, the book does provide a firm grounding in the basics of the plastic deformation of metals. The four star rating reflects the age of the book, not the quality of the presentation. The price being asked is typical of that of textbooks, but I think that it is a bit steep for one that is 25 years old.
