Biography

On one hand, Future Of The Left are a band much like many other bands are a band. Three men, wielding bits of wood and metal strung with strings and skin, often to be found playing to rooms of other men mildly intoxicated on watery dilutions of strong lager. On the other hand, however, you can take that most basic factual definition and dispose of it by any means deemed socially and legally ... Read more in Amazon's Future of the Left Store

Editorial Reviews

Welsh alternative rockers Future Of The Left unleash their 2012 album the plot against common sense released through UK indie label Xtra Mile Recordings/ILG. It's the first album since 2009's Travels with Myself and Another. Featuring the singles "polymers are forever" and "sheena is a t-shirt saleman" it constitutes 49.8 minutes of singing, shouting, slinking, smashing and (at times) sobbing, the album is the best thing the band have put their name on to date.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Album -- It Will Leave You Blistered June 12, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Good noise-rock is hard to come by these days. Bands like The Jesus Lizard, Tomahawk, and Helmet have fallen by the wayside, and because of this, Future of the Left's THE PLOT AGAINST COMMON SENSE feels more raw, energizing, and intense in today's music culture than it would during any other time. It's refreshing. The bass is heavy and distorted, the drums are being beat to death, the vocals are desperate and shakey. Although the band's music comes across as rough-around the edges, it's quite accessible; the band makes good use of hooks to keep songs melodic.

Lead track "Sheena is a T-Shirt Salesman" starts with a kick-drum that quickly feeds into a manic, paranoid brand of hard-rock. This song also showcases how catchy Future of the Left can be; the album does an incredible job of balancing the band's aggressive music with conventional pop music. The band finds the most success when focusing on melody more than its lyrics. The lyrics are generally angrily absurd (as can be seen from some of the song titles,) but the absurdity reaches its apex in "Robocop 4 - F*** Off Robocop", a song about ridiculous Hollywood sequels (including Pirates of the Caribbean 47) that compares Billy Corgan to Lord Voldemort. The band slows down in its closing "Notes of Achieving Orbit,"; starting with spoken-word vocals that build up to a shouting refrain. It's a satisfying way to end an album that feels angry with the world.

Fans of the aforementioned bands (The Jesus Lizard, Tomahawk, and Helmet) will love THE PLOT AGAINST COMMON SENSE. I'd recommend this album to anyone with a passing interest in hard rock, or if anyone is tired of rock music being pervaded with synthesizers and drum machines. Standout tracks include: "Sheena is a T-Shirt Saleman," "Goals in Slow Motion," and "Beneath the Waves an Ocean." Interested listeners will be given a good sense of what to expect from this album through this sample.

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing July 12, 2012

Future of the Left are a progression from Mclusky. They are kind of like indi rock mixed with garage punk with a flaming lips kind of delerium to their lyrics (a little bit Dead Kennedies but more melodic and consistent). They have a fantastic sense of rhythm and song construction with some exceptionally witty and non politically correct lyrics, they'll take a swipe at anyone.

A lot of fun to listen to loud, great driving music (if there aren't any speed traps around).

They don't conform to any typical genre or marketable angle so they seem to have stayed under the radar for years.

Great album. All their albums are very good and if you like them definitely check out their work with Mclusky.
