I recently purchased this unit from Amazon for my laptop. Frankly, the price was a large factor in my decision. The unit is VERY small, very light weight and it works well. It derives power from a USB port ( both USB data and power cord are included with the unit), which is my only complaint. I use mine with a Dell Inspiron that is a few years old, runninf Windows XP and with only 2 USB ports. I use it as my primary desktop / laptop, so a USB extender port hub was a necessity. Unfortunately, the DVD writer causes too much of a power surge. Simple fix, though, I just bought a power convertor / charger for USB and connected the unit's power USB to the port on the convertor / charger. Software CD Rom included was not a big help and the programs included ( Nero et al) aren't all that new or as fast as newer programs. Regardless, the burner works well, has a very small foot print and is priced very competetively.

For the price you pay, this is an excellent slot loading DVD player. A few things I wish I knew earlier:

* By default it takes 2 USB ports, one for data and one for power, but a USB to AC adapter can be used on the power input.
* It works fine in Linux.
* The eject button is hard to press. When I change disks I use the operating system eject command.

This item arrived promptly and worked within seconds after being plugged in. It is cheap, it is slot loading, and it works well. Two negative things about this product are that it requires two USB jacks on your computer, one for power one for data. The other negative is that the eject button is for show only it has no button behind the front of the case. so ejecting the disc requires opening MyComputer and right clicking eject on the drive letter. However i mostly use it with itunes so the eject button in itunes is just as convenient as the button on the actual device would be.

For the piece i got the eject button isn't working ,I contacted the seller and here is what he has to say .

"These are slot loading drive - so you have to eject from within windows by
right clicking the drive - the eject button on the slot load is for design
only - but its slot so there is not button its ejecting to you - "

Absolutely pathetic.

I received this drive, and was quite disappointed! Just asn an FYI, I am a computer tech, building and repairing computer for over 25 years now.

The Pro's

- It reads CD's and DVD's

The Cons:

- Without using an external power source (not included), it will take up 2 USB ports. One for Data, one for additional power. I have 5 other external CD/DVD "tray load" USB drives, and all use just a single USB cable, and work perfectly. I purchased this one, as I needed a slot load to embed into a custom enclosure.
- The eject button on the drive seems to be just for looks, and is not functional. You have to open My Computer, right click on the drive, and select eject
- When you do eject the disk, it flings it out! So, be prepared to catch it, or it will end up across the room on the floor.
- You have to push the disk pretty far into the drive, before the mechanism catches it. It will not pull it in nice and smooth like most other slot load drives do.
- The access light on the front does not show when the drive is accessing data.

Do yourself a favor, spend a little bit more money on a better drive, and stay far away from this one!

This DID NOT WORK with Windows Media Player 12 on my HP Mini 110. Also this requires 2 USB ports. On the lighter side, fast shipping. If you need an optical drive do a little more shopping before going with this. The only reason I went with this drive was the price and it was a slot load. I will send this back!

Really unable to say anything critical or bad about this unit. So tiny and so good. Just a little wonder
