This is a perfect intro to DADGAD tuning. DADGAD can make you sound good with very simple techniques and this book and cd prove it. Right from the start I was impressed with the potential DADGAD has to offer. With the very first exercise you learn three chords using on finger on a different string on the same fret and sound better than most three chord standard tuning songs in beginning guitar books. The exercises get more involved as you go but maintain a pace that is very comfortable. I listened to the cd that comes with the book to hear the exercises and was impressed with how musical the exercises sound. It's almost criminal how simple they make it to sound so good. I doubt I'll ever go back to standard tuning again.

If you're looking for a book of DADGAD tunes, this is not it. This is more of reference manual of phrases, licks and chord voicings and fingerings that you can use in your own exploration of the DADGAD tuning. I can't get too "in depth" here since I've just started working in this fine book, but if you want a solid source of ideas to help take your creativity to the next level, this book is a good one to have in your arsenal! I've given it 4 stars since I too would have liked a few more songs, but I can guess that the licensing hassles involved in putting in more than original or public domain songs would have been too costly. Otherwise, it's still a good reference to have.

this is a great book with very detailed explanation. I am about a third or half way through and this is a good book on how to use DADGAD tuning - it has many examples, but so far has had few songs.

I've been playing guitar for over 40 years. Maybe I'm dense, but I hardly ever ventured away from the standard EADGBE. This book makes it easy to understand the beautiful DADGAD tuning for Fingerstyle Guitar. I'm only maybe a quarter of the way through the book and I have been truly inspired by what I have learned so far.

This is an excellent introduction to fingerstyle and DADGAD. It is written for someone who already has some skill with playing in standard tuning. Fingerstyle in DADGAD tuning is a little different than in standard tuning due to the different chord shapes, so it requires a few adjustments, This book helps you do that. If you are learning DADGAD you will not regret getting this book.

This is one of the best guitar books I have come across in all my years of playing guitar. I have been playing in standard tuning for years and wanted to get into playing in other tunings.

I brought this book along with three other books on the subject of DADGAD off of Amazon a few weeks ago. Mel Bay presents Understanding DADGAD for Fingerstyle Guitar reigns supreme.

Doug Young's writing, ideas, and concepts have been helping me to apply what I know in standard tuning to this beautiful DADGAD tuning.

This book is a must for anyone interested in playing in DADGAD tuning. This book will be my reference book for DADGAD tuning for years to come.

Understanding DADGAD is all about understanding playing in this tuning. Many other books on this topic teach songs with very little theory. This book emphasizes chord vocabulary, playing in minor keys, scales and intervals to begin with. Then it moves into a series of very unique sounds and tricks native to DADGAD. This book won't add very many songs to your repetoire. What it WILL do is unlock numerous creative ideas and give a roadmap to composing in this tuning. The included exercises are very helpful in applying the concepts. Priceless!

This is a systematic approach to DADGAD that enhances improvisation by way of understanding. I'm working my way through the book, but DADGAD is quickly becoming my go-to tuning thanks to this wonderful book. I believe that I'll emerge a better player in all tunings thanks to investing my time in Doug Young's method.
