Totally Relevant to Today's World!,
By Betsy Poulin (Lawton, Oklahoma) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Problems of Work (Hardcover)
I don't know about you, but this world is becoming one that I'm no longer sure of. I've always been confident in my abilities, sure that my employment would continue as long as I wanted it to, secure in the knowledge that my future looked pretty good financially, etc. But what used to be "bumps" - the stock market taking a dive, housing going down - don't seem like "bumps" anymore. They're not recovering - and rather than the government doing something to correct it, it seems we're going in the direction of things getting worse. There's more unemployment, huge taxes in the future, businesses closing! Then these "broad" problems started hitting home --- a few of my very competent friends were "let go" from their jobs. I'm actually good at what I do - but so were they! Suddenly my confidence was shattered.
I realized one thing - I had to personally do something about it. Could I change the direction some of these broad changes are taking us? Could I talk to someone and say - Hey! This great country of ours is, in great part, based on the individual's excellent work ethic? So PLEASE don't pass laws that make it hard for companies to keep employing us? -- If I could I would. And I'll keep trying to find someone who will listen. BUT - meanwhile, there IS someone who would listen --- me! I could do something to restore my confidence and do everything possible to ensure I didn't become one of the "statistics" of the unemployed! I figured I better put my gas mask on first! and then be in a position to help others. How did I do that? I read AND applied the information in this book - The Problems of Work. I can't believe what a difference it made. I regained my confidence, I understand what's going on and have tools to actually do something about it. I came out of my confusion and, well - apathy - about the condition of the world. Have I changed the world? Read the newspapers - nope, I haven't made a dent. BUT - here's a great line from the book: "You cannot talk adequately to a man if you are in a sub-apathy condition." So not only did the information in this book help me personally, but now I CAN talk to others about what I see as a scary future. In fact, I've already talked to a friend who felt the same, had him read the book and he too is feeling way better about his future. Now the next step - find some big "ears" that may have more influence and can actually help do something about what seems like a very wrong road we're traveling. So, yes - I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It's so very important that we individually regain our own confidence in our own futures. The more people who do that - the more it will positively affect others.

THIS IS ONE GREAT BOOK!!!!!,
By
This review is from: The Problems of Work (Hardcover)
I wasn't sure a book about work would be fun to read. Or even worth reading.
What a pleasant surprise this book turned out to be! As I learned in the introduction, Scientology is a broad science of life and has many, many applications. This book assists both the worker and the executive. This will result in man being more competent and more able, less tired and more secure in the workaday world. Who doesn't want that? I know that the technology of Scientology is already in use in many offices, corporations, schools and churches. THE PROBLEMS OF WORK contains the senior principles and laws which apply to every endeavor, every problem of work that one encounters. You will find out about: - What does holding a job depend? - Handling the confusions of the workaday world. - Is work necessary? - The secret of efficiency. - Life as a game - Affinity, reality and communication - Exhaustion (loved this one!) - The man who succeeds. I highly recommend it. Read it and use it!!!

IMMEDIATE APPLICATION!!,
By Jay (CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Problems of Work (Hardcover)
I was so impressed with the simplicity and usefulness of this modest book. The information here allows one to immediately apply it to his life and, especially, his work. While reading along, I realized that my attitudes were changing. And in the best of ways. I found myself actually getting rejuvenated and interested in work and groups again! This book contains the tools that one needs to live life with vigor and interest, to enlist support from one's group and to succeed in the work place as well as in life. Was I surprised to gain so much? Well, yes actually. But, I am beginning to understand why so many good people follow the philosophy of Mr. Hubbard. He's gathered the best of the best for us. And he has put it into a workable philosophy. I am grateful, and I'm thrilled to have found this gem of a book!

Amazingly Simple!,
By Rob Writer "Book Junkie" (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Problems of Work (Hardcover)
When you are looking for solutions to working in the business world, you expect things like time management or how to get along with your boss or co-workers.
Instead I found this book and was amazed at the simple solutions it provides. One thing I put to use right away was taking a walk. It was incredible how easy a solution it was to stress and confusion. As I walked I got calmer, more focused, and relaxed. When I got back to the office, I saw things with a fresher view and many things that had been confusing me were plain as day clear. Just that guidance alone was worth the money, but there are so many other things in the book that, if applied, make work fun again or at least more productive. I find myself more in control of my job, more in control of my inter-office relationships and even my boss is more friendly to me. Go figure. Terrific book!

So good!,
By Andy Wilson "whizkid" (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Problems of Work (Hardcover)
I read this book years ago and thought it was interesting. I then re-read it recently with the new issue and although the text is not changed it was definitely a more asthetic experience.... the old book was a small green book with pretty small writing, and this one is just a pleasure to read, with outstanding little woodcuts (I'd like to know who the artist is) at the beginning of each chapter. Hey! I like art!
The part that I thought was amazing was that there was so much PRACTICAL knowledge for regular people who want to get ahead in life. It is really a philosophical book about why we work, and how important that it is that we do... many people find it enjoyable to complain about work, but actually we often meet our best friends or even our future partners at work, and the job gives us the pride of being valuable and contributing to the culture. Plus the wherewithal to survive! I kinda dig philosophical stuff so I actually really, really enjoyed this book -- it was better than I remembered. If you haven't read any of Hubbard's books this is a good one to start on, as it isn't very long and it has a lot of great ideas for survival in today's world. Hey -- it's tough out there! We need all the help we can get.

This is NOT a good edition of this book,
By Scott King (L.A., CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Problems of Work (Hardcover)
OK, once again, I need to warn anyone seeing this that this is NOT a good edition of this book. The edition you SHOULD get is here:
The Problems of Work or, for a softcover, here: The Problems Of Work (English) As you can see, there's a lot of positive reviews of this edition of the book. I think some of them may be for the new version of the book and the reviewers didn't get that this is a different one. Also possible is that they found the data helpful regardless of how it was delivered to them. However, the 2007 version of this book is so far superior to the 1999 version that there's just no comparing the two. First of all, the 1999 version contains alterations of the actual structure of the book. The chapter breaks are not even where Hubbard wrote them! The typesetters, publishers or whoever messed up the original copy that was sent to them and that was used on all editions since the beginning. Only in the early part of the 2000's (is that what we're calling them?) did someone (I think David Miscavige) go back and recover the original manuscripts that Hubbard typed. Then the original errors by the publisher were discovered and corrected. Aside from that MAJOR correction, there are numerous typos, incorrect punctuation, etc. that the original publisher introduced to the book which have been corrected in the 2007 edition. It is also much more beautifully designed and packaged, and has an incredibly helpful and extensive glossary. Once again, YOU DO NOT WANT THIS EDITION. If you're interested in the book (and you should be!) go get the most recent, 2007 edition at one of the links above, for hardcover or softcover, respectively. |
