5.0 out of 5 stars Socializing, Training & Handlling Your Puppy
We originally saw the "Raising Your Dog With The Monks of New Skete" videos on PBS, thought they were wonderful and purchased them. We recommend them to anyone who is planning to get a puppy. They are not, however, the end all regarding puppy socializing/training & handling, but for new puppy/dog owners, they offer a lot information to get them started...

3.0 out of 5 stars New Skete Monks Infomercial
After reading "Art of Raising a Puppy" I assumed that this video would aid me in raising mine. Instead it is a series of interviews with the New Skete Monks, with about 30 minutes of techniques within. Absolutely not what I was expecting.

After reading "Art of Raising a Puppy" I assumed that this video would aid me in raising mine. Instead it is a series of interviews with the New Skete Monks, with about 30 minutes of techniques within. Absolutely not what I was expecting.

In addition, the three tapes have repeating segments of video. Once you have seen tape one, you will see the same scenes rearranged on tape two, etc. This is NOT the be all/end all puppy training video as advertised.

They are not, however, the end all regarding puppy socializing/training & handling, but for new puppy/dog owners, they offer a lot information to get them started. CONSISTENCY, UNDERSTANDING, TENDERNESS, AND LOTS OF LOVE & KISSES are extremely important. Plus, the operative word is a firm "NO" whenever and wherever necessary. We never caged or beat our puppies/dogs and never had to. From what we saw and learned from the videos, the Monks of New Skete" offer an abundance of information to the "novice" puppy owner.

Aaron (Sioux Falls, SD United States) - See all my reviews
The Monks of New Skete have the most wonderful techniques of dog training that exists. My wife is a vet. and she knows the importance of these videos. Anyone who tells you differently, is definately a liar. If the Monks come out with more videos, my wife and I will be the first to buy them! GUARANTEED!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST EVER, December 12, 2002

The Monks should recieve a Nobel prize for teaching a generation of humans to understand & properly care for dogs. If you understand them you revere them, then anything is possible in terms of your relationship with your dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars It really helped., February 19, 1998

The videos have really helped me and my husband. We have 2 "kids", our chocolate labs and we were having a heck of a time when we first got our kids. We read several books on dog training and nothing worked for us. Our Vet reccommended we read the Monks books, we did. We then found out about the vids and found that the visual we got from the vids really taught us how to do it. Thank you New Skete Monks- A happy home now. END

4.0 out of 5 stars I have a wonderful GSD as a result of these books and videos, March 8, 2002
By A Customer
It's always helpful to have visual information available to back up what you read in a book. There may be more about the philosophy of the training contained here, but this is an holistic approach and not just an instruction video. It is very valuable. Koehler similarities?? Are you kidding?? The Koehler method is monstrous and quite the opposite of what is presented here.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very dissapointing, October 25, 2001
While I am a big fan of the Monks' books and methods, I found the videos seriously lacking. Primarily they are self-promotional videos disguised as training videos. They offer less than ten minutes of true training advice. I'm truly happy that I borrowed these from a friend rather than paying for them!

The videos are almost as nice as the actual monastary itself. The Monks are beautiful people and they have proven that to me time and time again. I have one of their shepherds and he is truely part of the family END

1.0 out of 5 stars Not much there, November 23, 1999
By A Customer
These videos remind me a lot of the koeler method of dog training. The monks have the right philosophy but fail in training portion. Has anyone noticed they are still using hard leash corrections? No. because they didn't show you that segment on the vids. In essence the training method still shuts the dog down and doesn't nurture the true heart of the dog, which is as a predator.
