5.0 out of 5 stars More Obscure Music Reissued
I'm flabbergasted! I just reviewed a band called Silver Apples and in that review mentioned this band! Lo and behold it's out on CD. I read Mr. Bruce-Douglas'comments, so I am a bit leery of buying the CD. I have this on vinyl and pull it out to stun friends. They want to know who the hell this bunch was. What fun! This is another band that was not afraid to deviate...

3.0 out of 5 stars Eerie psychedelia
Unlike some bands from the late sixties who were marked "psycedelic," but weren't nearly as trippy as their album covers, "Ultimate Spinach" produced undeniably psycedelic material.

Now I'm a big fan of "real" mind-altering music. To me though the problem with most of this kind of music, is that the truly spicy stuff, often is also very...

This is another band that was not afraid to deviate from the norm in music. Sitars, theremin, and other like instruments make this a fine addtion to any collection of "psychedelic" or uncommon albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best psychedelic music ever recorded!, August 27, 1999
Ultimate Spinach makes other 'psychedelic' groups, including Pink Floyd, look like bumbling amateurs! The Hip Death Goddess still freaks me out, and I'm 47 years old!

Unlike some bands from the late sixties who were marked "psycedelic," but weren't nearly as trippy as their album covers, "Ultimate Spinach" produced undeniably psycedelic material.

Now I'm a big fan of "real" mind-altering music. To me though the problem with most of this kind of music, is that the truly spicy stuff, often is also very dark. I find that frithning 'cause this music can, if you allow it, get into your mind and emotional state in a very intense way. Now it's great if what you allow to get in is good stuff. But most of the stuff in those days was made by lost, frustrated, and desperate people. So often that's the stuff which is in their music. Now you can have a nasty dark Rolling Stone song from that time and say "mmmh, interesting." But a truly dark psychedelic piece can sort of get to you and make you feel that dark nastiness. But maybe that's just a problem overly sensitive people like me have to deal with. Anyway the stuff on this album struck me as being trippy and creepy.

4.0 out of 5 stars a psychedelic classic, October 31, 2000
it is one of the most bombastic and ludicrous things i've ever heard -lyrically speaking. the music itself is excellent however. it is clear that the group were influenced by,indeed derivative of, the jefferson airplane and country joe and the fish (especially dove in hawk's clothing) but the album still manages to hold one's interest all the way through. the band were quite talented musically as well as vocally, and thats why it is such an interesting artifact. this may be a very dated recording, but it is fascinating nonetheless. sacrifice of the moon is a pretty and strange 4 part instrumental , ballad of the hip death goddess is a bizarre psychedelic opus. in fact , words like BIZARRE and STRANGE are the best adjectives i can think of concerning this disc. ultimate spinach has got to be one of the most bizarre bands of a bizarre time!-and yet this music is also accessible and certainly not unlistenable. i'm amazed that this album actually made the top 40 charts! thankfully i believe the tracks on this cd hasn't been altered or deleted in any way unlike the other 2 ultimate spinach releases. i recommend this album , it is a minor classic like two other bosstown sound debuts (beacon street union and earth opera)

3.0 out of 5 stars Has BEST psychedelic song ever!, June 3, 1999
By A Customer
This album by the Ultimate Spinach contains one stroke of genius, a song which epitomizes the "psychedelic" song movement. The song, "Mindflower" embraces, both lyrically and musically, themes of cerebral expansion by exploring classic heavily "effected" guitar riffs and a seductive melody line. This album is a GREAT buy for this one song (and you might even like some of the others!).

5.0 out of 5 stars DATED BUT DEFINING, May 10, 1999
Great late 60's album. It's dated but this was what was happening underground at the time. YOUR HEAD IS REELING-PAMELA-FUNNY FREAK PARADE are the best cuts! I am ordering the CD...my original LP is worn out

5.0 out of 5 stars A Psycedelic Rock Classic !, January 19, 2000
By
Karta de Ithaca "Karta de Ithaca" (ITHACA, NEW YORK United States) - See all my reviews
This album combines many styles of music together till it comes out sounding like a new music for a new type of eclectic type listener.Folk is mixed with Rock,Sitars and synthesizers are used to spice up several cuts into an extremely original style that even pre-date many of the Beatle's Eastern instrument combinations.Folks! there is a huge amount of our 1960's culture represented here. To Ian Bruce Douglas i have to say that no record album sounds just like a CD reissue, but it sure beats the heck out of looking for this album for 20 years or worse yet ,not even knowing about the very existance of this Classic Album.

3.0 out of 5 stars a casualty of its times, October 21, 1999

this record veers wildly from sorta great to just plain awful, it's hard to believe the same guy wrote all this. his singing rots though and for crying out loud those lyrics are the worst ever. "bananas hanging out of their ears", indeed.
