3.0 out of 5 stars it's alright
Most of the complaints have already been addressed, but just in case you haven't seen the other warnings - if you plan on getting that 200 rebate from amazon, you won't. This is the third time amazon has ripped me off when it came to rebates. So, they've ripped me off, when it comes to cell phones, for 450 dollars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great !! and it's FREE !!, May 20, 2003
Since the UK nokia 3650 i bought is not compatible, i've bought a new nokia 3650 in amazon.com for FREE!! and i can't stop using my phone since the first day i got it !

PROs:

1. Large screen (It's really HUGE!!), colourful view (although Samsung has a better view with 65K colors, while nokia 3650 has only 40K colors, but trust me, 40K is clear enough even for the photos!!), bright enough (can still see under the sun)

2. Convenient buttons with the "call" and "end" buttons (Some phone doesnt have separate buttons for call/end), 4-way Navigator button, Menu button(just one click and u can choose whatever applicants u want to use eg. Calender, Real One..), Camera button (just click it and start to take a pic !), Tzone button (for the GPRS surfing, emails..)

3. Multimedia Message Service (MMS) which is really GREAT! Send photos, video clips, or soundclips to your friend's mobile phone (his mobile phone must be compatible with MMS service, and has signed up for the MMS). You may prefer to surf net with your computer, but it's really convenient to surf net and check your emails regularly (or u can set up to have email alerts!) while walking on the street, eating, waiting for bus..

4. Bluetooth technology, can be used with PDA, digicam, and laptop (which have bluetooth as well) to connect for wireless internet at your PDA/laptop...etc Java Symbian (which other phones doesn't have!!)

5. 3Mb built in Memory and 16Mb Memory card, which allows for large storage of photos, notes, to-do lists, phone books (can store nearly unlimited phone numbers).. etc

6. Surprisingly, the Image quality is much better than i've imagined. Definitely clear enough, and even when sending to emails.

7. Have "Loud speaker" function, where u can use it just like a Walkie Talkie, without having a headache after chatting for hours!

8. Has Photo caller ID !! (which Samsung doesn't have !!) I heard this only works with T-mobile, but i'm not sure about it, coz I have no problem using it with T-mobile..

9. So many other functions to use.. eg. To do list, calendar (with time and alerts), notes, recorder, Games, Real One player, currency converter, calculator, composer...

CONs:
Well, I would say that although it's a Triband phone, thus u can use it around the world ONLY IF you're using a US wireless service (which is quite expensive to call from overseas for a long period). You can't use this phone to subscribe another wireless service in other country (eg. UK, Asia).

The T-zone for surfing net is much slower than a computer, but still okay for checking emails.

The keypads are weird. Take me very long time to type a sms/email. Try to get familiar with it !~

The size is undoubtly bigger than other phones, but still small enough to fit in your pocket. Compare the features of this phone with other small-sized phones, and u will know why is it worth !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nokia 3650 ... A delightful surprise., May 21, 2003
By
S Bluebear (MI United States) - See all my reviews
This is the first "top of the line" cell phone I have ever bought and am really thrilled by the product. All the cell phones I have owned so far have been by Nokia (8260, 8290) and you can call me a loyal Nokia customer. Now on to the review based on my tinkering with it for the past two days.

Reception:
The most important requirement in my book. The reception is very good compared to some of the smaller nokia models. Extremely impressed.

Size:
The previous unit I owned was probably the smallest phone ever manufactured (Nokia 8290), if you discount the one Ben Stiller uses in the movie Zoolander. I really liked that phone since I am a small person and I can slip it into my pocket without it feeling bulky. This phone is almost twice as large as the 8290, but not as big as some reviews have made it out to be. I am still getting used to the size, but for the features it packs, I can live with the slight bulkiness.

Keys:
The keypad is definitely weird, but I am already used to it. So I should stop complaining.

Camera:
I have never owned a camera phone before, and the in-built camera is pretty cool. The resolution is adequate. People have to realize that the primary function of the camera in this phone is to take silly pictures and email them to friends and family. If you are really looking to take high resolution pictures, wait a few more years or use your digital camera. I am sure this feature will change the way I use a cell phone. Isn't technology wonderful??

User Interface:
I am used to the simple user interfaces of the 8290 and 8260. But this one phone packs a lot more features and so is a little more complicated, but is still a breeze. I like the level of customization that is possible (e.g., it allows you to specify two hotkeys for the most commonly used functionalities; unique ringtone for every contact in the list )

Memory:
Approximately 3 Megs inbuilt and 16 megs memory card. That is pretty adequate for my intended usage of the phone.

Email (t-zones):
You need to sign up for T-zones (the basic ... version for 1MB/month or ... for 10MB/month) to access the internet features. T-mobile has a promotion right now with the ... plan (first month free and unlimited data transfer during the month).
It was pretty straightforward to setup pop mail accounts. I setup three different pop accounts that i use in less than five minutes. The only trouble I had was that T-mobile does not explicitly state the SMTP server information and I had to dig around for this information. Nevertheless, the phone handles emails well. I only intend to use this phone for emails when I travel and do not have internet access available for my laptop and I think this phoen is adequate for that purpose.

I think 1MB/month is not sufficient if I plan to check email occasionally and email pictures captured by the phone. But that is a T-mobile related issue and not specific to the Phone.

Misc: Not crazy about the video recorder. The polyphonic ringtones are cool. I do not own a mac, so bluetooth is kind of useless to me at the moment. The color screen is adequate for all practical purposes. Compatibility of nokia chargers and earphones among various nokia models is a bonus as now I have three chargers from older phones and I have them at home, work, and my bag and a charger is always handy.

Summary: This is the first feature-packed phone I have bought and I am pretty impressed. The only cons are the slight bulkiness and, it does look cheap. The inbuilt camera is pretty cool and the reception is awesome. I still have not tinkered with some of the features, but am very satisfied with what I have seen so far. Would give a 4.7/5.0

4.0 out of 5 stars The best phone I've had., May 13, 2003
By
gellio "gellio" (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
In the last 2 years, I have had the: Nokia 5190 & 8290, SE T28 & T68i, Samsung 8500, 460, S105, and now the Nokia 3650. It's a fantastic phone.

PROS:

- Highly customizable. You can create your own labels for the phonebook and you can also organize your menu to the way you want. The housing covers are also a nice bonus. The soft keys can be used as shortcuts for whatever you want them to be.

- Camera: It's great. I never thought I would use a camera phone, but I have. Looking at apartments last week, I took pictures. I was in the bookstore and took pictures of books I was interested in, so I could later go online and read reviews about them. I've taken pictures to schedules posted at the bus stop. I could go and do my thing and no the options for when the buses come. It goes on and on.

- Video Recorder: WITH T-MOBILE YOU CAN RECORD SOUND ALONG WITH YOUR VIDEO! NOT WITH AT&T OR CINGULAR (to my knowledge), ONLY WITH T-MOBILE. This is fun to have to. My roommate's cat is crazy and I wanted to prove what an aggressive cougar she is. I took a video of her going after me when I was trying to feed her. Sound and all.

- Size: I put it as a pro because it's much smaller and lighter than you'd imagine. I was really surprised when I got it, especially how light it is. People seem to discount that the antennas attached to other phones should be counted as part of the phone's size also. With all my antenna phones, I was afraid of putting it in my pocket for fear of breaking the antenna.

- Sound quality: With all my Samsung phones (and I love Samsung) I got splotchy reception in my apartment. I expected worse out of the 3650 (with the internal antenna) and got better. Much better.

CONS:

- Nokia didn't make the extra step to make a 65K color screen. My S105 had 65K colors. Although it's a lot more, the difference is hardly noticeable, so it's not really an all out con.

- Keypad: I love the keypad because it's different and unique. It does take getting used to - especially texting.

All in all, it's a fantastically fun phone. It sure does turn heads. I'm almost self-conscious using it because as soon as I pull it out, people are looking at it. It's that hot!

jemaerca (River Forest, IL, United States) - See all my reviews
this phone has a lot going for it but it there are better products out there (sonyericsson p800 would be one).

pros:
- GSM 900/1800/1900
- wireless web ready
- built-in camera/video recorder
- voice-activated dialing
- IR port
- Bluetooth
- speakerphone
- world phone
- large color display
- expansion slot for adding memory cards
- with promotions from Amazon, this is a very good deal, especially given the features set

cons:
- the circular layout of the keypad is counter to how i've trained my thumb to key in numbers
- could be lighter
- too bulky for a pants pocket
- battery life could be better
- only low-resolution still shots (ok for the web but not for printing)
- screen is only capable of 4,096 colors
- cannot record sound while recording video

5.0 out of 5 stars quite happy, January 10, 2004
By A Customer
I've had this phone for ten days and can't seem to stop playing with it.

One pleasant surprise I found is that T-Mobile provides free web/wap browsing and pop3 email access through phones that can use it (no minutes used, no per meg charges). They don't advertise it, but it is well documented on various forums (such as howardforums.com and fatwallet.com) and my account details on the T-Mobile website list "Included WAP Browsing: Active".

You can also load a lot of applications on it, and sync your Outlook contacts and calendar. To do this, bluetooth is the way to go. All you need is a bluetooth adapter for your computer, and the Nokia PC Suite (free download from Nokia website). Don't buy the Actiontec USB bluetooth adapter (check the recent reviews for that product, detailing driver installation problems).

The phone is larger than what passes for fashionable these days, but that doesn't bother me. It fits well in your hand and has lots of features. It can double as a small PDA. I don't think it would be as functional if it were just a little flip-phone.

The button layout looks weird, but it makes it easier for typing email addresses and other website URLs.

The camera is surprisingly good for a cell phone camera. Using the included email access, you can take pictures and email them to your friends at no cost. If you send the pics as MMS messages, there is a charge, but sending pics via email is free. It can even shoot video clips!

You can also do online instant messaging (not SMS text messages) for free. There are many applications you can use for this. Agile Messenger is the one I use. It's a free download, and supports AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, and MSN. Apparently it must be using port 80 (see below).

The only limitation on the free WAP browsing is that only ports 80 and the two ports used for email are open. Everything else is blocked. This means that you can't access SSL pages (where you see a locked lock on your browser's status bar). For example, you won't be able to log in to your bank, or buy things from Amazon using the free WAP access. It can be done, but the cost for that capability is an extra $19/month.

I am very happy with this phone so far, and I think T-Mobile offers very good plans. I chose the 1000 minutes national plan ($40), but I may have to switch to the 3000 minutes regional plan ($50) if I use it too much.

Great gadget.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Phone, Awesome Features, innovative design, December 6, 2003
By
Rudrashekhar "r3s9" (Westborough, MA United States) - See all my reviews
I had great faith that Nokia will not disappoint and it did not. People have criticized the round dial the large size but I appreciate Nokia for innovating and trying out new designs
The dial is cool and the size is not offending and has a good feel to it when you use the phone.

Size:
Yes the phone is not as small is the flip phones or the T616/T610(will refer to them as T616) but it has a good feel. The phone feels good to hold and use and talk, I used to own a A460 and did not like talking on it.. never felt comfortable with the grip..
If you are living in a place where it snows, you will appreciate the fact that you can feel the phone when you hold it and use it under horrible weather conditions. I used to carry a Palm IIIxe(used primarily for calendar, games and to maintain a To Do List) and a Samsung a460 but now I only need to carry one device which I got for free!

The only phone which i would like to replace this phone is a Handspring Treo but which is of comparable size!

Nokia has a lot of support:
Unlocking this phone is easier than most GSM phones as Nokia phones are well researched and you get all kinds of information on the web.
http://www.angelfire.com/pro/nokia3650/
Nokia uses face plates on almost all phones = If you scratch your screen all you need to do is buy a face plate (Does not cost much) and you can replace the screen yourself (I am not referring to LCD screen only the front panel and battery cover).

Screen:
The screen is very pleasing and you can use any image for the wall paper... you don't have to pay to buy wallpapers most images work fine! You can also click a pic and use it as a wall paper

Camera:
This phone has a better camera than the T616 with better clarity and image quality. Also you can record videos. Though to record long videos you need extra space on the MMC card and additional software. This is a phone plus PDA which also has a camera for a very low cost. The camera is not meant to replace a real camera and is only to click pics for fun and send them across!! So do not expect more.. !!
Though it's only a matter of time before the quality of the camera improves that it will replace your real camera!

PDA:
Most people who want a good calendar app, note a few things down and maintain a To Do list and do not want to maintain two phone list( one on their pda and one on their phone) will love this phone! Though one misses the touch screen on regular PDAs the T9 text input does a good job!
http://www.t9.com/t9_learnhow.html

T616's calendar does not allow you to enter weekly events, from what I have seen you have to enter such events in outlook and then sync! For 3650 the calendar app is complete and satisfying and I sync with Outlook only for backup.

Voice Recorder:
The quality of the recording from the mic is good if the person speaking is close to you even if you are seated on the last bench in the hall the quality is acceptable. The only thing I don't like is that the default recorder cannot record longer than a minute and you need to buy additional software to be able to do that! The same is true for being able to record long videos.
http://www.psiloc.com/?id=prod&nrp=100

Ring Tones:
Ok this is something that much better on the T616 in comparison! The quality is not as great... and the volume cannot be really loud though contrary to other reviews its good enough!

Profiles:
This phone has different profiles which control the various settings for ringers and alerts and you can configure them the way you like but for integrating your calendar with the selection of a profile you will need an additional software package (Some people claim that the newer firmware does not need it, I am not sure about this) Still this is a great feature and one of the reason for using a Java VM and Symbian is so that third party software providers can make software to suit your needs...

Games:
I don't play much but seems people love playing games on this phone....

Battery Life:
Good enough, regular phone use without too much use to IrDA and Bluetooth, you will mostly charge your phone once in two days.

Tzones:
If you have unlimited Tzones then you can go ahead and configure many (don't know the upper limit) IMAP and POP mail accounts and send and receiver mails with attachments easily! Also you can browse the web... haven't done a lot of that.

SMS:
One of the main reasons for shifting to GSM and TMobile is so that I can SMS my friends all over the globe. Most cell phone providers in other countries using GSM will allow sending and receiving SMS from any GSM phone. It's a craze in other countries don't know why only TMobile allows you to SMS and other GSM service providers ( ATT and Cingular) don't allow international SMS.
Any ways this a good reason for shifting to T Mobile

Network Coverage:
Well don't know of the rest of US but works great where I live. Yes Verizon does seem to have a better network but if you will not be traveling much then it does not matter. The quality is clear even when the network seems weak and I have got GPRS coverage too in all places I have tried.

MMC Card:
People have used 512 MB MMC cards with this phone and they seem to work great. What this means is that you can record really long low quality videos and complete seminars! Also encode movies and watch them... Also back up your phone data onto the card if you don't backup to a comp. I think this is an awesome feature to be able to upgrade your memory just like most PDAs. Though people claim that to be able to use 512 MB cards you will require Nokia to do a firmware upgrade on your phone.

Overall, Nokia does a great job at making 3650 a good basic phone but also has tons of goodies to be able to replace a PDA and provide a fun camera!

PS: to lock you keypad click on the right select button and then the * key. Hmm the lack of being able to lock your keypad once you beging a handsfree conversation is by far the only thing I hate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heck of a phone!!, May 16, 2003
By A Customer
I was concerend at first regarding two things for the Nokia 3650: Might be too big and the keypad might be annoying. After much use I can safely say neither are a problem. The phone is big enough that the screen is HUGE and can easily read even emails on it but is also small enough that it fits in your pocket no problem. The screen is is truly incredible, very bright and vivid colors. The keypad is strange at first but after a few days I can type much faster with it than a standard cell phone. Your hands just wrap around it perfectly.

I didn't get much done for an entire week at work just placing with all the features. IMAP4 is awesome so I can read and write email with my company's exchange server. The bluetooth sounds very cool but I haven't purchased a wireless handsfree yet (next on my list). There are tons of Java programs and games available online that run great on the phone.

The camera is very cool too. It won't replace a 4MP digital camera but while on the go it takes very clear pictures. With my company several people got this phone and its great being able to send video and pictures to each other while traveling or to people's email if they don't have the phone.

The entire operating system on this phone is incredible too (hard to believe this phone is even related to a Nokia 3390 or 8290). Very easy to understand menus but function much more smartly like a PC (even can multitask so when you return to the phonebook it is still waiting on the same person).

This is handsdown the coolest phone I have seen. The new Ericsson P800 may do more but this Nokia is the most capable phone I have ever used (and you can't beat Amazon's price and fast shipping). If you are looking for a good solid phone then you can't beat the Samsung S105, but if you want a phone/camera/PDA with a great screen and lots of Internet capability then the Nokia 3650 is defintely for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally., November 24, 2003
By A Customer
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Well, I ordered this phone in August and promised myself I wouldn't write a review until I got all of my rebates in! And now, over three months later, I can write a review of my lovely free phone.

This was my first cell phone and I'm very happy with it. However, in addition to the long rebate wait, my first phone did die on me with the blinking Nokia logo and all of that. But Amazon express shipped a new phone right away, no questions asked. I've been fine since then.

There's not much to be said that others haven't covered. If you're a Mac user, this phone works very well with iSync, and iCal (I no longer carry a planner, it's all on the phone) and there are programs available that can make the phone act as a remote for your Mac (very nice for playing iTunes). The camera is fine, there are some amusing games available (including a Gameboy emulator), and you can read ebooks on it. This is one of my favorite pastimes--the program I use allows you to view the text lengthwise on the screen and it's surprisingly easy on the eyes. The screen on this computer is very, very nice. Quite sharp.

I use a third-party PDF viewer to display bus schedules from the mbta on the phone, which is extremely convenient. I use AvantGo for news, etc.

It's not that big at all--this was my one big concern before ordering from Amazon, so I went and checked one out at the local cellphone store (Salesman: "Those are nice phones; they cost $300, though." Me: <looking dumb> "Wow, that's so expensive!") and was pleasantly surprised by how small it is. Okay, so it's not one of those miniscule flip-things, but the screen is much better.

The 610 does look nice, and was not available for free when I ordered the 3650--I can understand people wanting one of those instead so you might want to compare and see which suits you best. But, for what it's worth, I like my 3650 very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it if you use the screen, July 7, 2003
By
I read a lot of the reviews and carefully researched this phone. I also visited a Circuit City to see the phone in person. As a OS X user, bluetooth and iSync support was mandatory. Also, I wanted to play games, surf the net, AIM, take photos and email then, etc. This phone is bigger then a Sony Ericson, but after holding the new Sony's in my hand, I find them way too small. I can;t imagine using that phone for anything other then a phone. The screen is way too small compared to the 3650. The 3650's screen is perfect. The dial pad is awkward the first week, then it's second nature afterwards...

Pro's
1)Sybina OS
2) play games on nice size screen
3) email/surf on nice size screen
4) great features and sound
5) bluetooth
6) can run applications
7) headset speaker phone feature
8) blue keypad lights are cool
9) camera is half way decent
10) painless syncing with iSync via bluetooth
11) Holds more address info when addresses are synced from X's Address Book
12) Reads and displays AIM personal buddy photos when taken from X'sAddress Book
13) Can get opera browser to surf with

Con's
1) keypad takes a week or so to get used to
2) only comes with 2 games (more of a whine)
3) Aren't many apps for the OS yet
4) A lot to learn, gotta read the manual

It comes down to what you want from the phone. If you want small slick Zoolander type phone, get a Sony-Ericsson. If you want to surf the net, play games, take notes, make shopping lists, AIM, etc you really want the 3650. The SE may do those, but it's a joke on the SE's small screen compared to the 3650.

(REAL NAME)
Now the 3650 works with the Macs Isync program for transfering your contacts. It will also work with the Macs bluetooth. I got the phone and love it. I go online through the phone on my Mac G4 Powerbook with a Dlink USB Bluetooth adaptor. Its takes some work with your providers tech support to tweek the settings but it works great after that. If your having problemes with your Mac make sure you have the new versions of Bluetooth and Isync downloaded. Have fun.
