I have been a fan of the Mortal Kombat franchise since the first game. I loved every single Kombat game but thought it got too repetitous by the time MK3 came out, although it was still fun. 3.0 out of 5 stars Fun
Classic Mortal Kombat with some upgrades and some nice graphics.

There is the arcade mode, basically just going from fight to fight beating people down till you get to the top.

Two player mode, beating down your friends and family.

MK chess, kind of weird but it was fun.

Of course you have the fatalities and special...

I have been a fan of the Mortal Kombat franchise since the first game. I loved every single Kombat game but thought it got too repetitous by the time MK3 came out, although it was still fun. Mortal Kombat 4, I thought, was the turning point of the franchise. Totally different environments and 3D characters were just a hint of things to come for the franchise.
In 2002, Midway, possibly, made the best Mortal Kombat game since the original: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. The graphics were the best ever in a Kombat game up to that time and the story was original for the series and entertaining. Not only that, it presented some nice extras for those of you who got tired of playing the arcade mode.
Now two years later, Midway unleashes the sequel to Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance...Mortal Kombat: Deception.
The story takes place almost exactly where the last game left off. The intro. video is very nice and entertaining. The graphics are pretty much the same from Deadly Alliance but upped a little bit. Sadly, there is no music video in this one like the previous game with Adema doing their Immortal as the trademark song for Deadly Alliance.
Back are some classic characters from Kombat games of the past and some nifty new ones. Personally, I think the newer characters to this game are cooler than any other batch of new characters since MK2.
The environments are now tweaked where you can do an instant kill/win by pushing your opponent off the edge of a cliff into a ravine below or into a pool of acid or many other contraptions the arenas may have. Multiple levels are also in the game and the extreme detail put into them is extraordinary! Even the shattering/cracky of glass is nicely detailed!
There are a few new mini-games you can play with if arcade mode and the newly revamped, and nicely done, Konquest mode bore you...Chess Kombat and Puzzle Kombat. Chess Kombat is like what it sounds only with Kombat added to the game. Puzzle Kombat is a Tetris-style mini game only a little different. When you get rid of squares, your character gains energy in his/her special bar. Once the bar is full, you can perform your character's special move that will affect the puzzle playing area of your opponent's. The mini-versions of the characters also fight each other so-to-speak.
All in all MK: D is one of the finest fighting games out there! In fact, as far as newer fighting games, it most likely is the best one out there! For those of you who were addicted to Deadly Alliance, you will find no problem into diving into Deception! I highly recommend this game for fans of Mortal Kombat and fans of the fighting genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars MADE ME A FAN - AGAIN!, October 10, 2004
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
I was a die-hard MK fan during the 1990's when the first three games were released. However, around the time of Mortal Kombat 4 I felt the direction of the game (and the fun) had become tired.

Now Mortal Kombat: Deception has arrived and turned me into an MK fan all over again. The game works thanks to three solid areas.

#1 - Good old fashioned button mashing fighting is still here along with plenty of characters (classic and new) and some great environments to fight in. Yes Fatalities and Combos are as tricky as ever and now there's even Hara-Kiri (kill yourself before an opponent has a chance to do a fatality.

#2 - IT'S ONLINE! This was the major plus for me since now I can battle my friends (or other humans) on Xbox Live anytime I want. With the old games fighting the computer was repetitive and it was too hard to get breathing people over for some good old fashioned video game violence.

#3 - Konquest Mode. Mortal Kombat delivers a fun little adventure game where you play as a character in the MK world. You have plenty of side quests (most so simple it harkens back to the early 90's style video games) and lots of fights that then kick you into arcade style combat. Through playing the game you also earn coins to unlock movies, characters, costumes, and plenty of extras. You'll spend hours on this part of the game alone.

So for fans of the series I strongly recommend Mortal Kombat: Deceptions. For former fans who might not have played MK in a long time...this is the time to rejoin the franchise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Fighting Game for XBOX, October 25, 2004

I bought this game a few days ago and I haven't been able to stop playing it since. Mortal Kombat Deception is just fun all around. First of all the graphics are great, plenty of blood if you are into that thing; the gameplay is also just as good. You have a choice of three fighting styles which makes it that much more fun and challenging plus you have different levels to fight on in each individual level. You can knock someone of a tower and they fall down and you jump right behind and keep on fighting. Very Fun.

The other games like Konquest and Puzzle and Chess are also very fun and add more to the game itelf. Overall a very fun fighting game and very fun to play with other people.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Fighting Game for Xbox!, October 10, 2004

This is a very well made fighting game which will hold me over another month until Halo 2 comes out. Great graphics, sound, and awesome interactive arenas (my favorite being the one where you can hit the bodies that are hanging by the noose). This game has way too much replay value just to be a rental. You get Arcade mode, Chess and Puzzle mode, a long 15-20 hour Quest mode, and best of all 1 on 1 online play. It's funny when you (...) the guy talking smack, but fear the quiet ones (some guy already has a record of 687 Wins and only 12 Losses...WOW!). The online mode keeps track of your record so you can match up with opponents of your calibur. This is a must buy for anyone who loves a great and improved fighting game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Fighter, November 4, 2004
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This is the only the second Mortal Kombat game I've ever owned, and the first is MK 2 on sega genesis, so I can't make any comparisons between other games in the series.

That being said, I have come to recognize the features and flaws of Mortal Kombat : Deception.

The controls were uncomfortable to me at first, since I'm used to the Soul Calibur 2 layout. All four face buttons on the Xbox controller are assigned to either a kick or a punch, with the right trigger being block and the left trigger switching stances, which I'll touch on later. Unlike some fighting games, only certain orders of button presses will cause a combo. I like this becasue it discourages button mashing, which is a good thing. However, it does limit the amount of different combos you have. I think it's a worthy trade, however.

Each character has two differnt fighting styles and a weapon. These are cycled through with the left trigger. The different styles help make each character more unique. The real advantage of switching styles is that you can chain the same combo into all three styles, making it possible to execute eight or nine hit combos that do tremendous damage.

The graphics during the actual fighting are very well done. The enivironments are all pleasing to the eye, as are the character models and outfits they are wearing. The only part the graphics seem to go down at all is in the Konquest mode.

Konquest mode is kinda like a Mortal Kombat RPG. The plot is pretty basic, but there are plenty of side quests to partake in. The side quests could have been more varied, as most of them require you to find something or contact someone and then report back to the quest giver. They are by no means easy, however, since they require you to look everywhre for a particular item. I enjoyed the searches, but I know some people found them to be boring and time consuming. The voice actinag is only fair, but adequate. The only real qualm I have with this game mode is the graphics. The character models here look very low res and unispired. The environments suffer from the same malidy, but they are so big and varied that it didn't bother me too much.

The other game modes are Arcade, Puzzle and Chess. Arcade is your classic beat up a series of bad guys, which is present in every fighting game ever. Puzzle is kind of a weird version of tetris where you try to outlast opponent. Chess is a chess game where you have to fight for a square. It's cool because you get to choose which character is which piece. The bishops also get to cast a variety of spells, which is a nice addition. Both chess and puzzle are not the focus of the game, but they are nice extras that help further the total amount of time you will play the game.

Overall, I would reccomend Mortal Kombat : Deception to any fighting fan or Mortal Kombat fan. It's a fun game with nearly 15 hours of RPG style action, along with a solid fighting engine.

Classic Mortal Kombat with some upgrades and some nice graphics.

There is the arcade mode, basically just going from fight to fight beating people down till you get to the top.

Two player mode, beating down your friends and family.

MK chess, kind of weird but it was fun.

Of course you have the fatalities and special moves, what would mortal combat be with out that? One thing I found a bit weird was the blood, sometimes it seems to clump up and it looks more like clay or sauce more then blood.

There's a single player mode on the game called Konquest, this has some good features but a lot of bad ones. A good feature about this is that it teaches all the moves for all the characters, kind of like a tutorial. Now the bad parts, it is so repetitive and so boring, it almost feels like working. The story line, well it's kind of interesting.... the voice acting isn't the best; the voice actors seem to almost be interested in what they're reading. You also unlock some characters and levels and other misc stuff by going through Konquest, this was also very tedious and boring. The single player mode Konquest was overall just very boring and tedious.

Overall I must say this game, save for Konquest, was very fun and if you like Mortal Kombat you should check it out.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great fighting game - renewed the classics, January 22, 2005
By
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Wow, first off, let me just advise you not to listen to the review titled "stupid, boring game with horrible live quality". It's certainly the reviewer's own opinion and all, but read the line in it saying "completely stupid graphics, horrible movement". Wow, if these graphics are bad, I'd like to see what they're used to. Must have gotten their hands on some very hush-hush new technology that I'm not privy to. Hmm.

Anyway, this game is a great way to get into fighting games for your Xbox if you don't own any. Forget Dead or Alive unless you're in it for the females, and I can't think of any other fighters for Xbox worth mentioning. So if you're interested in this genre of games, Mortal Kombat is your best bet. And Deception is not a disapointment.

The graphics (in my opinion anyway, but maybe I'm not as educated on this as some *ahem* reviewers are:-) are just great. Sure, they're arade styled, and not dark and super-realistic (gallons of blood fly from every hit, just like the arcade classics) but it's Mortal Kombat. It's supposed to be over-the-top.

The learning curve is a unique one. You can go in inexperienced and manage, go in somewhat as an average gamer and do fairly well. Then there's room for the uber-game geeks to spend all their hours learning moves and techniques to better button-mash. Also, there's Konquest to keep you entertained, where you command some odd kid who runs around and does certain tasks to unlock more goodies from The Krypt. More characters and arenas to play at, anyone?

All in all, a good game.

Note to parents or young gamers: Rated M for Mature. Blood and gore are heavy, just like all Mortal Kombat games. Can't really say it's not for the kiddies, because I played the old ones when I was younger, but if the idea of a guy getting kicked off a tower only to fall and splatter in a blast of blood and guts (their head even flies into the camera for a close up) makes you queasy, don't buy it. Fatalities are graphic, and interactive enviroments like Sky Temple (Hinted at above) and others hold objects that make for even more blood-splattering visuals if utilized. Even the classic "falling into the spikes" technique is used. So kiddies, get your parent's permission before buying. And parents, if you don't know that the Mortal Kombat your kid wants for Christmas is a bloody and violent game, you need to educate yourselves quickly on the rating system and game culture.

Buy it if you want a great fighting game and are willing to spend it's high price. However, if you're more accustomed to the super-cool fighters some *select* reviewers are used to with graphics that make this one's look "completely stupid", (I'd really like to play these incredible feats of technology) then maybe you'd best hold off...

Peace out

3.0 out of 5 stars from tlchicken.com, May 2005, May 11, 2005

Kung Lao, Quan Chi, and Mavado-- three playable characters from the last Mortal Kombat game-- didn't make it into the Mortal Kombat: Deception lineup. However, you can play as Dairou. His fighting styles are Wing Chun (one of Mavado's fighting styles from the last game), Escrima (one of Quan Chi's fighting styles), and his weapon is his Autumn Dao sword (which controls almost exactly like Kung Lao's broadsword).

That pretty much sums up what you get with Deception: a remix edition of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. Only six of the eighteen characters from the previous game return for the sequel. The rest are replaced by either lame characters from older MK games (any Tanya fans out there?) or lame new characters that were cobbled together from the leftover parts of Deadly Alliance. There are a couple of fan favorites, like Baraka or Mileena, who make their long-awaited return here, but they're lumped in with the likes of like Kira (imagine if Kano and Sonya Blade had a daughter) and Kobra (the spawn of Johnny Cage and Sonya... she's been around the block, I guess...).

But to make up for the laughably uninteresting cast of characters, Deception's battlegrounds provide the extra personality the game needs. Instead of the the big boring circular arenas of Deadly Alliance, players get to knock each other over ledges, through walls, and into gigantic, over-the-top death traps. A carefully-placed uppercut can quickly turn a losing match to your advantage if you happen to be fighting next to a huge metal press or a pit of acid. One particular level features prisoners who will reach through the bars of their cells to hold your opponent while you get in a cheap shot. As a nod to longtime fans of the series, the prisoners consist of the absolute worst characters ever to appear in a Mortal Kombat game (Stryker? Ha!).

I wouldn't be surprised to see most of the cast of Deception thrown in the cells for the next game, though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Graphics, Great Fatalities...hard to find the extra fighters.., October 21, 2005
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My main complaint is that I found it very difficult to find the extra characters. I have been playing the MK franchise at home since the Sega Genesis MK 1. IT HAS NEVER BEEN SO TOUGH TO FIND THE EXTRA CHARACTERS. I HAD TO GO ONLINE AND CHEAT TO FIND THEM. I also find it stupid to earn coins to see some someone's dorky face when you would rather earn something that has to do with the game itself. Did you notice the word-play? Opening the Krypt items gets horribly boring and pointless! I liked the new "Tetris-style" game and the Mortal Kombat CHESS GAME. You can have lots of fun playing these with a fellow gamer. Konquest mode is so-so. If you enjoy the one-on-one online fighting...this is the game for you! So many neat move combinations and special powers......the fatalities are always a good thing!
