5.0 out of 5 stars My Yorkie loves it!
This Pet Pen is perfect for my Yorkie Puppy. She instantly went into it without coaxing once I put her bed in it. She goes in and out and feels very secure in it. I use it also for when I leave the house knowing that she is safe and secure. The item is quite sturdy and I have used it outside in the wind and I was expecting it to lift but it stayed in place. 3.0 out of 5 stars Nice pen
We bought this pen for our 5 month old Wheaten Terrier. The first few times she was fine but after about a week or so she figured out that she could tip it over and escape relatively easily by jumping up on one side. She's a little too big to put the roof on so for now we are going to save it for our next puppy. Very durable pen and great construction, I would recommend...

I use it also for when I leave the house knowing that she is safe and secure. The item is quite sturdy and I have used it outside in the wind and I was expecting it to lift but it stayed in place. The only thing that was different than depicted in the pictures is that the zip top is only partially canvas and the rest is mesh. In the picture it looks like the top is mostly canvas providing more shade.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice For *Temporary* Use Like Office Or Travel..., November 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The PET GEAR OCTAGON PET PEN is a snap to set up. It's basically one piece - actually two if you count the zip on cover - that folds up and pops open for an easy to use den for your cat or dog, while on the road.

I just got a Shiba Inu puppy in October and I bought the PENTAGON PEN to use in my office because I wanted a secure place for her while I'm working. I'm one of the lucky folks who can bring their pets to work, so that's what I use it for.

My puppy has a regular metal crate at home for potty training and sleeping in, so this is just her home-away-from-home den, which she naps in, plays in, and eats lunch and has her snacks in.

It's been pretty durable so far, and like I say it's easy to set-up: just unfold and the PENTAGON PEN will pop open. It has a floor covering, so you don't have to worry about putting something down on the floor before using it, which makes it great for outdoors or inside on carpet. There's a zippered door that can be closed or opened for easy access and the mesh windows all around give your pet a room with a view, but also comfort and security.

I wouldn't recommend the PET GEAR OCTAGON PET PEN for use with potty training, however. The inside is too large and you can't section areas off, which means your pup can just go to the other side to do his/her business, but it isn't so large that it would qualify as an exercise pen. That's why I say that this is more of a temporary use type of thing rather than something that your pet could use long term. If you are shopping around and looking at the various dens/kennels that are available, particularly if you're shopping for the arrival of your new puppy, I would suggest getting Midwest Life Stages Double-Door Folding Metal Dog Crate, 36 Inches by 24 Inches by 27 Inches. That crate is metal and can be divided and expanded to fit your puppy when he/she gets older.

The PET GEAR OCTAGON PET PEN is pretty light-weight, even when fully opened up, so you can move it around easily.

I deducted one-star because on the inside of pen, there are two vinyl tabs that are reinforcements for the external pocket. This is simply irresistible to a dog or puppy and I've caught my Shiba eagerly chewing on them. The tabs aren't sewn flush against the inside of the pen and so they have edges that are too easily grabbed by a dog's teeth to play tug with. I've sprayed bitter apple on them to stop the chewing, but I'm sure in time this will prove to be the weakest link in this pen. I would have preferred no external pocket and no tabs because everything else inside the crate/pen is pretty secure, i.e. all seams are covered, etc.

Anyway, it's great for temporary use as in office or travel but I don't think this will hold up to stand alone use unless you already have a well-behaved, toilet-trained pooch, who doesn't jump around too much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Pen, February 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am very happy with this pen. Great quality and sturdy. I am using it with the top off for easy access. I purchased it for a one pound dog and it really works well. I spent hours reading researching pens/playpens, and I am glad I bought this one. It is easy to fold and take anywhere you need to. My only suggestion would be to have a tie up for the strap on the outside. When the puppy is not in the pen he likes to go right for the strap hanging. I had to clip it up so he wouldn't get hurt.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Should Have Bought This Years Ago!, July 9, 2011

The kittens tend to get a bit rambunctious at night and starting hunting for toes dangling from the end of the bed. I bought the 46-inch dog octagon, which is more than roomy enough for three kittens (and their things) to spend the night. They have a safe environment in which to play and sleep unsupervised and my feet are once again safe from tiny claws.

I have one gripe - this thing is like a road map, in that it is virtually impossible to fold back into its original configuration. The internal frame bends easily so I tend to just leave the octagon set up.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible design. Of no use if your pet is more than a couple of pounds..., October 6, 2011

I bought the largest size, which claims to be for "dogs and cats up to 90lbs". That's completely incorrect as my 30lb bulldog puppy within mere minutes managed to collapse the sides, flip it over and generally turn it into a exercise ball he could flip/roll around the house in. I've already requested the refund and will put it back in the mail today. I guess if you have such a small dog that IMO you probably don't need this in the first place it would work as an effective pen. Outside of that, I don't see much point to it. Save your money. Oh, and it's unfortunate that I'm required to give a 1 star review. This thing truly warrants no stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars lasted only a few weeks, May 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I loved this the first few weeks for my 7 pound puppy . I had to take him back and forth visiting ifamily and he enjoyed it. But Easter Sunday we left him in it for 2 hours and came back where he had chewed right thru mesh and escaped. Before that he had chewed off the velcro tabs that are used to hold up rolled door. This is not safe to keep him in while not at home. Too bad because it is light wieght and so portable. I ended up getting a metal one to replace it .

5.0 out of 5 stars Cat loves this, November 8, 2010
My cat loves this pet pen. It was quick and easy to set up. The cat went in as soon as she saw it. She rolled all around on the floor and acted excited. I have had it for four days now and each day she chooses to spend time in there with her toys. I am glad she is getting herself use to it since I want to take it with me out of town trips so she will have her own special place when we are visiting others. I have never zipped the door closed so I can't say what she would do if that happened.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pet Pen for kittens, September 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this to confine a litter of kittens that I rescued from my backyard. This was roomy enough for the litter box, bedding and food dishes. The kittens could not escape and any mess was easy to clean up. I was very pleased with how it folded up flat after I was done with it. This product is perfect for baby animals.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Features / Poor Quality, July 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great design. However, that's the best thing I can say. We have only used this portable dog playpen about a half dozen times and the fabric where it sits on the ground has worn through to the thin metal frame and will soon not be useable. We never leave our dog unattended in it, so we know our tiny pom (7 lbs full grown)is not rough housing and shifting the pen around to cause this immediate wear. In fact, we usually put a blanket under the pen and another inside the pen. We bought the largest model for a huge dog so that it would function as a screen room for our tiny dog, not just a crate. My advice is to look for a more durable product.
