I am so glad I bought this pack! I just got back from a 2 month trip to Europe and it was perfect for me. The full front zipper made it so I didnt have to unload everything to get at sometging on the bottom. I used compression sacks and then loaded it in like books on a shelf. The lower section can be zipped into. Separate compartment or combined into one. Both compartments have straps that can be latched aross so it doesn't open during travel. Also, those straps have an elastic guard that can fit over the extra material so they don't flap around. The shoulder and waist straps have a cover that zips around them so they don't get pulled or yanked during transit. I found the backpack to be very comfortable. There are only 2 drawbacks as far as I can tell: it is far too big and long to be used as a carry on even if it isn't full and the daypack doesn't easily attach when it and the main pack are filled. I ended up wearing the small pack on my front a lot of the time because I couldn't get it zipped on the larger pack.

I purchased this bag in 2011. Since then, I have traveled to India, Nepal, South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia with this bag. It has held up perfectly. It is well-constructed. I have stuffed it to the brim, and the material and zippers have held up perfectly. The larger pack comes with a cover which helps protect it when checking it. The day pack zips on and off easily. It is great as a carry-on. I am a 5'5" woman, and it fits comfortably. I loved it so much that my best friend also purchased one. She loves her bag, too!
