I got this from Best Buy for under $50. What a score!

This printer was a snap to add to our network, and is intuitive and easy to use.
I had a Dell AIO printer that cost $300 that was always getting paper jams and having problems. This printer has worked perfectly with mild use.
I like that's it's really compact, too. It fits well into our cabinets in the computer room.

Unlike some other printers, the ink for this one is well priced. Some brands really jack up the price of ink.

This printer stinks in every way possible. My review was based on a very short usage time. Now that we've had this printer a while the biggest issues are that it goes to sleep automatically after a while, which means, when you go to print over the network, it doesn't wake up and print. Pressing the power button does nothing. Also, turning it off and back on doesn't reconnect it to the network. Usually we have to completely unplug it for 30 seconds and then plug it back in to get it to connect. What's the point of being wireless if you have to stand over it and dink around with it?

Second big problem is the ink. It self cleans all the time. I've printed about 4 pages in color and the yellow and magenta cartridges are now out of ink. The printer refuses to print in black and white because the color cartridges are empty. What a ripoff! ZERO STARS!

I found this printer on Slick Deals for 50% off retail, so I got it ridiculously cheap. However, for the price, this is a really solid all-in-one printer. Most recently used the fax feature, and it works to perfection, as easy as pie.

I use the printer in my office, so I'm not printing pictures and all of that, but it prints pages from the internet great, as well as the leads that are sent to me. It scans and copies wonderfully as well.

I found a great source for printer ink here on Amazon, that sells for under 5 bucks a piece. Amazing! Look around, you'll find it. If you go to Staples or a retail store, you'll be paying $25 a piece, which is tomfoolery. Amazon is king, as always.

I'm satisfied with my purchase (so far, LOL).

Edit: 6/12/13: I have had the printer for awhile now, and I only print to it out of necessity, because it's an annoying printer. Right now, my printer has 4 completely, 100% full cartridges, yet I still get beeps and error messages after every print. Not only at the time of printing, but at completely random times! I have heard my printer go off and start beeping the error beep at 3 in the morning! Now I see why this printer got so many negative reviews. It was good for awhile, but not anymore. Too many bugs or something. It still prints OK, but annoying otherwise.

Pretty good printer, I've had mine for awhile now. But this printer will cheat you on ink. Once 1/2 to 2/3 of a cartridge is used, it will say it is out of ink. There is a simple solution to this though: Take out the cartridge. Then push on the cartridge until you can see the ink level window. Then cover the window with an opaque sticker (make sure the cartridge cover can still slide forward and back). Put back in printer and use until ink is actually gone. :-)

We got this printer and put brand new ink cartridges in it (all 4 of them). We NEVER have printed anything with color other than black. It says you only replace what is empty (Black right)?. WRONG, black runs out and all the other colors seem to be empty as well. So your still screwed into buying all the ink because it wont do anything with any of them showing empty. Even though its a color that has never been used.

As other reviews have mentioned, the printer does not work unless there is ink in every cartridge. If one of them runs out, the entire printer/scanner/fax machine becomes a useless paperweight. Brother even mentions on their website in the FAQ section that the printer uses color ink while it cleans itself, which is why the printer runs out of color ink even when all you do is print in greyscale. This is obviously a way for them to make more money. I would NEVER buy this printer again, nor would i recommend anyone else make the purchase. The ink is NOT cheap when you have to buy all four($55) just to get the thing to work again. Brother is trying to get all the money they can from you...STAY AWAY!

I bought this printer a couple years back and use it about once a month just to print misc things. Recently I got an error of a paper jam. There wasn't a paper jam so I went through it with a fine tooth comb and verified there wasn't any small bits of paper jamming it. I then went through the procedure to clean the encoder as that's what Brother tells you to do. I did this twice with no luck. Needless to say this printer is now in a dozen pieces sitting in my trash can, this thing is so worthless it upsets me that it's even taking up space in my trash can. Stay away from it!

I purchased this printer on impulse for the sale price and figured it would be more than enough to print out an occasional recipe, directions from MapQuest, or a tax return. The ink runs out quickly and is expensive to replace. Also, when any of the color cartridges become low in ink, the printer locks up and will not allow you to print unless you replace the "empty" cartridge. So, I bit the bullet and replaced all of the cartridges while saying to myself, "I just won't print anything in color." However, now I am unable to print anything in black & white - the paper comes out blank. If I want to print out a text document, I have to change the font color to dark blue. I tried cleaning the nozzles with a Q-Tip and alcohol - which did nothing. I tried manually running the cleaning feature twice, and that did nothing. I tried reinstalling the drivers - to no avail. I'm simply going to open up my living room window, and drop it down two stories to the curb and then look for a more reliable printer. In the future I will research products online before making a purchase - one of the nice things about the internet.

Update:

Since I wrote the first portion of this review six months ago, I've been copying and pasting everything into Word and then changing the font to dark-blue whenever I need to print out anything that contains text. I looked for some solution to my problem on YouTube and tried every hack I could find. I tried soaking the print head in a solution of alcohol and window cleaner. I also tried shooting it up with the same solution using a syringe in order to force out any blockage and of course I got no results. It's as if the printer knew exactly where to malfunction so that there would be no getting around spending money for a new printer.

this thing is garbage. bought it for $49 at bestbuy thinking i got a deal. i used color print maybe 2 to 3 times and its empty. you can not use ANY function, unless all for ink cartridges are full. so even if one color goes out, the machine is useless. well, i bought a new set of ink, and it printed once and now says my ink is empty! i bought another set, so all 4 ink cartridges are brand new, and it STILL wont read it, not i just get a message to replace my ink. and the printer is useless becasue it wont let you use any function. i checked the ink, all are full ( you can see the ink through the window). so, not this printer is sitting on my desk, filled with new ink and cant do anything about it. dont waste your time or money!

Verified Purchase
This printer was very easy to install, but I have been having some difficulty getting the wireless printer connection to work. And the printer did not come with a printer-computer cable, so I have to pick one up. But the printer, copier, and scanner are great! Do not know about the fax.

Easy enough to set up. The scanner works pretty well if you're just scanning jpegs or something to your computer. Easy to load paper & empty paper jams. Directions on machine are easy to follow. But...the printing quality is very lousy and no matter how much I clean and align things, it still doesn't print quality prints. They're often blurry or the pages are just half printed. Color is worst of all. Definitely not a good machine for photos. Or resumes. Or graphics. Or multiple copies. This is the bare minimum low quality printer. It's noisy and shimmies & shakes when it prints. And, as someone else stated, occasionally comes on (usually in the middle of the night) all by itself for no reason - lights blinking, making noises and scaring the crap out of me! The ink for this printer may be cheap but that kinda sums it all up. Oh yeah, it won't print black & white if the color ink is out or even just really low. I hate that. My Epson was like that too but, at least, it was a good printer. I just wish I'd seen the reviews here before I purchased one of these. Never another Brother for me!
