I've only had this for a week and needed it for taking low light video in an arena this past weekend. It did a good job even on auto! Very light weight and I don't think would stand up to a lot of abuse - but the controls are easy and don't feel weak. The menu is super easy and not complicated by a lot of un-needed in camera frills which can always be added on a computer later. The video quality is quite good - not up to the standard of higher level models, but nevertheless very acceptable. Most of all, this is fun to use. I owned a Canon Vixia previously but became disheartened with the complicated menu system and wading through pages of 'fluff' to find what I wanted.
This does not have an internal hard drive - works off SD cards - so I suggest you buy a large capacity one. I think this is better than an internal hard drive - no searching to find where your video is stored - it's all on your card!
If you are looking for a very inexpensive little camcorder, I would highly recommend this one.

I've been taking movies (8mm film, VHS, HI8, MiniDV, and now SD) for 40 years and I whish you could see the improvements the way I have. Yes, I can take better video with my high MP still camera (if I have the time to set it up), but this little camcorder is a very simple, foolproof way of videoing the family with vastly better quality than it used to be. 1.5MP is NOT enough to attain true HD (as anyone who has done their research should know) so it's an interpolated HD picture, but I think a very good one. There are three ways to show the results of your efforts in HI DEF: 1; get a mini/HDMI cable and direct connect to an HDMI equipped HDTV, 2; get a HI DEF TV with an SD card reader that can play AVCHD files (my Panasonic does that, and I'll bet a JVC will also), or 3; edit clips in the camera and backup and create a DVD (on a computer, using normal DVD discs with the simple supplied software which is loaded on the camcorder along with the full users guide) that will play on a BluRay player at 1080i (interpolated) connected to your HDTV. You can also play LOFI with the supplied AV cable. I may never get all of the hours of earlier video from past decades to easily storable DVD's backed up on HDD the way I can do with this setup right out of the box. If you want perfection, pay megabucks, spend a bunch of time and have at it. If you want to preserve memories that you can relatively easily see in near HI DEF, this is a really cheap way to go. My first portable VHS recorder and cable connected video camera (10 lbs, I bet) cost me over 2 grand in the 1970's. Think about that for a minute! Less than 1/3d the quality at 10 times the price!! Gotta go now and buy a bigger battery and a charger that doesn't have to be connected to the camera. It's worth it.
Two more points to ponder. 1. if you are going to be doing much high power zooming, invest in at least a monopod, or better yet a fluid smooth tripod. At 40x zoom it's virtually impossible to hold the camera (even with a pretty good stabilization system)steady enough to have smooth video. I know of no camera, regardless of price for which this is not true. 2. Also at high zoom, the image sharpness diminishes significantly. The same flower that filled my screen close up had more detail than it did when I backed up far enough to fill the screen at full zoom. Again, I'm not reducing my 5 star rating as one cannot expect perfection at this price point. If you can afford it, there are higher MP camcorders in this series with better optics, but they cost more and for general family videos, I'm quite happy with the overall quality. I'm particularly impressed with the way it handles low light conditions. I guess that's three points, and enough for now.

So when I bought this, I couldn't wait to get it in the mail, but after a month of having it, I can honestly say that, well I got what I paid for. First off, if you watched the infomercial for this camcorder, they made it sound like, you couldn't get a better camera if you tried, unfortunately, they're wrong. Now I'm not saying it's bad, but I'm not saying it's good either, here's why, it has focus problems, and I don't think it has a manual focus mode, so you can't focus it yourself, the auto focus can be VERY frustrating at times, also, I do not like the microphone that it has, I also don't like how you cannot use a wireless mic for it, as it has no mic input, and the plastic that is used for the body of this camcorder, feels as if it would break very easily, like if you would drop it once from pocket height on cement ground, it would completely shatter. But the up sides to this camera are, it shoots 1080p, which is great, it has a nice touch screen, it shoots pretty good in dark conditions, it has 40X optical zoom, and 200x digital zoom (You need to change the settings to enable digital zoom), it can take okay pictures, and it's pretty light weight. Overall, I would say that I would recommend this camera for somebody who just wants it for taking video of things such as graduation, vacation videos, or just videos around the house, But not for somebody who is looking into shooting homemade films, hidden camera prank videos (Which is what I bought it for) because it has no mic input, and to be able to hear anything somebody is saying, you need to be close with the camera, thus not making it a hidden camera prank, or for use of any type of professional use, this camera is far from being professional, like I said before, you get what you pay for. Thanks for reading, I hope this review helped.

This camera lasted about 2 months before the touch screen broke from NORMAL use - no drops, no nothing. The warranty DOES NOT COVER a broken touch screen. How can a manufacturer market a touch screen product but not warrant the touch screen? Why? My opinion is that probably a bunch of touch screens are breaking and JVC does not want to fix them. Bad product, bad product design, and bad product support.
The camera broke while still under full parts and labor warranty. The repair shop - Precision Camera in El Paso, TX - called me last week and told me the camera would be reparied and returned to me within 7 to 10 days - free of charge. Today I got a second call from Precision Camera telling me that the repair would cost over $200 - more than I paid for the camera - because a broken touch screen is considered 'physical damage' - this lets JVC off the hook for any touch screen breakage 'no matter how it broke' this from an unfriendly and aggressive JVC customer service supervisor.
Aside from all of that, the battery that comes with the camera lasts about 20 minutes tops. I purchased two additional batteries so I could record my son's 48 minute lacrosse games - this more than doubled the cost of the camera, but I figured it was worth it (big mistake) for a camera that would last for a few years.
This product stinks. Do not purchase it under any circumstances.

I bought one of these at a local retailer for an irresistibly low price. The video quality is very good, even indoors, though the still images are pretty poor; on par with an older phone cam. The video codec is compatible with my Adobe CS5 products, so I didn't have to deal with converting files:-). Mine came with a class 4 SD card, but the manual recommends a class 6 for the highest video setting. I purchased a class 10 as well, and I use that mainly. So far, no speed issues to report. As others mentioned, battery life is not great. You'll get 40 minutes of footage at best, which is just enough for me to film the kids here and there, but not for major excursions. Lower the video quality if you need more battery life, otherwise plan on buying another battery.
The shake reduction works well, and makes for nice smooth footage. The huge 40x zoom is smooth and easy to run slow and steady. The colors are vibrant and honest, particularly when shooting outside. Videos are limited to two sizes, 480p and 1080p, so no 720p x 60 here. I bought this for shooting home videos, and for that it works fine. Considering the very modest price, I am happy with it.

First of all, This is by far the best camcorder I have ever owned. The picture quality exceeds even a Sony in this price range if you ask me. The people that don't understand the software or think it is crappy need to use their brain. All you do is. . . first of all apply the core filter properly to the usb cable. Then while your sd card is inside of the camera, connect the usb to the computer and you will be given a prompt on the camcorder to select connect to another device(DO NOT SELECT PC). YOu will then get a prompt on your computer/laptop to transfer/import pictures and videos. VOILA!!!!!!!! Peice of cake. Not only that but the core filter reduces interference and you are left with perfectly crisp picture( not pixelated, etc, etc)The software works perfectly fine. The people operating this camcorder obviously need to learn some things.
If you decide to purchase this camera and learn a few simple tricks to render the best picture quality, you will be very satisfied with this camera. It honestly exceeds my expectations! This is honestly a very simple and intuitive camcorder to operate. =) My boyfriend has beautiful tan skin and the camera picks it up perfectly! I had an expensive Nikon and that couldn't do that. I would give this camera 5 stars just for how true to color it is!

I bought this Camcorder after researching between products and with couple of companies. I did look more into this Camcorder specifically after I had a chance to explore this in my friends place. We took some photos using this Camcorder and it really came well. The pictures taken in the Beach were really impressive as the water color was very natural. Also, the 40x Zoom really captures pictures really good. Shoots under noisy rooms came very crystal clear.
I would recommend to use a tripod when using in a function, as there are lot of shakes when we handle in hand. The Camcorder is very less weighted.
I would also recommend to get additional battery if in case we need to shoot more. Other recommendation would be to use a bigger SDHC/SDXC card to record more.
We are really loving this camera.

Bought this to take video at Christmas. Relatively intuitive to use. About 30 minutes of battery life. Good video and sound quality while watching it on the attached screen. Trying to download the video is when the nightmare began. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad. Unlike my 8-yr-old Sony camcorder, you could not simply download the files. You had to install their proprietary software which never worked properly. It kept locking up my computer and after 2 hours, I gave up and tried my MacBook. No luck there, either. Neither iMovie nor iTunes could download the files. I'm reasonably tech savy, but perhaps it was "user error". Just expect downloading your videos to be somewhere between a "hassle" and "impossible".

this might not be a problem for everyone but there is no on/off switch on this device. the only way to turn on the device is to open the screen. there is an off switch on the inside but it only functions to turn the unit off while the screen is open. you must open the screen to a full 90 degrees to turn on the device. once the video has started, you can not close the screen. it must be open or flipped to the outside and closed or the camera shuts down. meaning the screen must be on the entire time you are recording. this is a terrible waste of power and is one of the reasons the supplied battery only lasts about 20 minutes. i am returning the product. i can not work around this major flaw.
