As others have stated, the issue with the game failing to patch is real - and it's impossible to run the game without getting the patch installed. Thankfully there is a fix for this that has worked for me. Credit goes to GamingKnight over on the cheap@ssgamer dot com forums:

"Are you getting the error "Error binary patching file FileName LANLauncher.exe" when the 2nd patch is running?

The fix was pretty asinine.

I had to reinstall it to C:\Program Files\RockstarGames\L.A.Noire (notice that RockstarGames had to become one word; no spaces) as opposed to the default of C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\L.A. Noire"

I can verify that I had the same issue others are complaining about here, and this fix did work. I had to unsinstall the game completely from the original default directory, then re-download and install the game to the suggested directory above. Also please note, if you need to download the game again from Amazon, you cannot use the same L_A_Noire_Downloader.exe from your original purchase. Apparently Amazon's download exe's are one-time use only, so you need to go into your Amazon software library and download another .exe launcher.

It is pretty poor quality control for Rockstar to release the digital download with such a common and game-breaking issue. Amazon should also take some responsibility here given the number of customers this has impacted. To be fair, I did contact Amazon and they are now aware of the issue, and even offered me a refund (which I have declined now that the game is working for me). I hope this helps some of you who are going through the same frustration!

I assume the price has dropped so drastically because of the issues people are having getting the game to run. Here's what I did to get it to work:

1) Go into the directory c:\program files\Rockstar games\La Noire. Delete all the PATCHED FILES. (These are from your failed first attempt to patch.)

2) In your game folder there is an application that says Patch and it has a bunch of numbers after it. BEFORE YOU CLICK ON THIS FILE MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE RUNNING THE PATCH APPLICATION AS THE ADMINISTRATOR. To do this right-click on the icon, go to the properties tab and check the "run as administrator" box. (It took me ages to figure this out, because I only changed the application that launches the game to run as administrator.)

Make sure you're running the game file as the administrator as well. You might need to uninstall and reinstall the game. If you need to re-install the game, don't launch it until after you click on the patch file.

Okay, my review: This game is absolutely amazing. The attention to detail is amazing, you can literally just cruise the 1940s Los Angeles streets for hours and not get bored because they created an entire world. They must have looked at actual photographs of the streets of LA around that time. Think Grand Theft Auto in a 1940's time warp.

If you happen to find the arcade sequences hard, they give you an option to skip after failing a couple of times. If you are getting tired of driving, they eventually offer you an option to have your partner drive and cut that part of the gameplay out.

The story is intriguing and fun. The voice acting is GREAT and the facial technology is top notch. It's absolutely worth the thirty dollars I paid for it before the price took a sudden nosedive.

I am beyond impressed with this game.

So this game installs just fine but will not start when I launch it. Am running Windows 7 and have a good rig. Did a quick search to see if there was an easy fix and no there is not, at least yet. So why am I writing this review? Well I have to complain somewhere.

Why is it that in my classes (I am a college student) if I turn in a blank piece of paper for my final I do not get a good grade? Now how is it that real people, making real salaries, at real businesses can release a program, making money, to potentially thousands of people that does not run? This isn't like complex beta testing here. It is as simple as "oh my gosh, Frank, our game doesn't launch on a windows 7 platform, maybe we should look into that." And then Frank in response, "Well, I don't know, maybe we'll patch it later to start, I mean how many people actually use Windows 7? Let's not get carried away."

Never got to play it. Between huge download and huge patch and required error fiddling to get patch to patch which led to new set of errors I got fed up. Googling and Amazon customer service no help. My computer specs and abilities just fine. I just couldn't waste any more time on it.....

I ran into the same errors that everyone else seems to have. Since I had a new machine with a great nVidia video card, lots of RAM and updated drivers, I thought it would run fine. It doesn't even launch. The screen flashed, goes black, flashed again, then I get the Windows 7 generic "LA Noire has stopped responding" and the only option is to close it. No other errors, except some cryptic dll errors in the event log that don't help.

Other reviews recommend changing the install path, re-installing the game, re-downloading and re-installing, patching (which can't be done manually)... I tried them all, multiple times. Just can't get it to work. I'm just glad I paid for the sale price (five). For now one, I'm only getting my PC games from Steam.

I've reinstalled the game several times, but still cannot play it. When you try to play the first time, it will attempt to patch the game.
The patch always corrupts for me when I try to update the game. I've been trying to get this to work for a few days now, but I'm just going to give up.

Get the disc version instead, or buy from Steam. Games run by Windows Live are glitchy more often than not.

Did not work, could not launch after installation. Amazon customer service was good enough to give me a refund. Recommend that you get it for a different platform instead, pc issues seem numerous.

I ran into all kinds of problems when trying to run LA Noire. I looked all over the internet for a solution but nothing worked... until I realized something.

When I started LANoire (after installing the mandatory patch and having the game not work) I went to the LANLauncher -> Options -> Renderer. It was defaulted to DirectX 9. I CLICKED THE DROP BOX AND SELECTED DIRECTX 11.

I then started the game and everything worked! The game is still not running smoothly due to poor frame rates, but I am finally able to play. You should still "run as administrator" when you boot up the game.

I hope this helps!

Saw the reviews about issues with the game working and thought how hard could it be? I have a brand new gaming rig and my direct x (good tip from another reviewer) was up to date.

Wrong.

After downloading the game it actually installed fairly smooth.

Then the problems started.

Start the game and the game gets stuck on the main screen. Nothing happening. Ok. After a few exits and restarts I get the automatic patch download prompt and click yes. The patch would never download right. It would either download and not install or hang up midway through the process. Game would NOT progress without patch. There is also some weird social club sign up during the process. So the single player game I want to play is hampered by some internet application of which I have no interest in ever using? Awesome.

Next up was the Rockstar site itself which I followed and yet again no solution. I saw a fixes involving everything from deleting 4.0,to deleting/turning off realtek and even making sure the install path had no "spaces" in it. None of these worked. Once I got to the "fix" involving re-installing windows I promptly deleted everything and contacted Amazon which solved my problem immediately (Thanks!).

I was really looking forward to this game but Rockstar dropped the ball big time. It apparently is hit or miss to whether the downloaded version of the game will work on your pc or not. If you choose to go ahead and purchase be warned and good luck.

It looks like installation is really hit or miss for this game download. I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop that I bought last year (April 2011), running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, Intel i7-2630QM chipset, 8 GB RAM, 2GB VRAM, DirectX 11, and I couldn't get the game to work. My first download and install, I would launch the game, get a launch menu, and then nothing. I never even got to the level of patching. I completely uninstalled it, did a fresh new download, and installed it again. Same result. I followed all the directions on this page:

[...]

And still nothing. It's sad that Amazon has an entire topic devoted to this issue:

[...]

I contacted Amazon customer service, and they were very helpful. They tried helping me with the installation, and when that still didn't work, they made an exception to their policy and issued a refund. I then uninstalled it and deleted all installation files. I hope it works for you. It seems like it's a great game if you can get it to work. I've bought Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed 2, and Red Alert 3: Uprising from Amazon Game Downloads, and all of them have worked without a problem. This is the first problem download I've had, and it's too bad.
