question - can I use this printer to copy items that aren't flat . . . with the cover open? ex : hobbies, projects, jewelry, a child's art work . . . please help thanks please see above question

Sure you can copy that stuff, so long as it's NEARly flat and you're not too picky about the result. It likely won't look like a properly lit, color corrected photo though. My gal has used a scanner for a few of the necklaces she makes from flat seashells and small translucent glass beads, and many of the 'copies' looked nice enough they could've been used in ads - looked better in fact than many of the product photos I see on Amazon.
