The rOtring series of drafting pencils has undergone several ownership changes over the years with the demise if the company close at hand until Rubbermaid/Newell acquired the company several years agog and sells them under the Sanford Brands line. Thankfully they have revamped and revitalized the German based company and have left the manufacturer of the products in Japan instead of lowering the quality of the product for the sake of bigger prophets by having them made in China. The rOting 600 has for decades been the standard by which all other drafting and mechanical pencils been judged. The pencil is quality made and an excellent addition to my collection.

I have owned a pentel graphlet, pentel graphgear 1000, alvin&co, pentel sharp, zebra and many other pencils. None of them come close to the quality of this pencil. For one it is all metal construction. It also has amazing balance. It makes my hand writing look so much better. I think it was well worth the investment. It is the most expensive pencil i have ever bought but i also like it the best.

I was reluctant to buy this since its 50 bucks, .035mm and from Japan. Well let me be the first to quell any reluctance to order from japan, it shipped pretty fast and was packaged well. I will order from this company without doubt in the near future. Plus we need to order stuff from Japan so they can get back on their feet. As far as the pencil goes, its weighted really nice and feels good in the hand. I was nervious of the size, .035mm but .03mm lead refills fit just fine. Its well built, the only thing I would change in the design is to make it retractable or include a .035 in rotring 800 series, but thats no problem. It rocks and its worth every penny.

This is the modern version of the classic rOtring 600 mechanical pencil. They are currently made in Japan, to the original standard once manufactured in Germany. Functionally there is no difference between the vintage ones and this one. If you are an old timer, you will appreciate that we can still buy a mechanical pencil of this quality. If you have never tried one, you owe it to yourself to experience the highest quality mechanical pencil available. Nothing made of plastic can compare to these, the weight and balance is simply superb.

I've been on a search for the perfect pencil, the one that I'll take with me to my grave. I think I've found it.

I'm comparing this to another crowd favorite, the Uni Kuru Toga: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004OHNTVC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004OHNTVC&linkCode=as2&tag=todmedblo-20&linkId=4PEAIPJT3XWNZ54Y

The Kuru
- a third the price ($10 vs $30)
- if the rOtring is a tank, this is a Lexus. Not as sturdy / solid-feeling / well balanced...but a bit more comfortable (still wish it had a rubber grip)
- unfortunately, looks a lot more like an ordinary pencil - not going to impress other people, if that's what you're going for
- eraser is more difficult to access than the rOtring (the cap is awkward and the eraser small)

The rOtring
- the sturdiest pencil I've ever used, made from solid metal
- perfectly balanced
- I trust this pencil. I'm not scared of it breaking.
- hex shape = no more rolling pencils!
- very intimidating, professional and unique appearance
- unfortunately, not as comfortable as the Kuru

Both have their distinct qualities and advantages, so it really does come down to what you want in a pencil. Either way, both are of excellent quality and you will not be disappointed! But, if you're looking for the cost-no-object perfect pencil, I highly recommend the rOtring 600.

I hope you found this helpful. Please feel free to ask question,

Todd

Fantastic pencil. This pencil is hefty enough to provide a steady writing experience without becoming a burden to hold. The design is amazing and the cool metal feel of the body automatically made this pencil my favorite. However there are a few cons.

If you drop this pencil the lead stabilizer will bend (as it seemingly always drops head first) quickly becoming unusable. Then you are left with a $25 piece of metal. The best fix that I found, other than removing the stabilizer and using the pencil without it, was to take the lead stabilizer from a zebra mechanical pencil (with the same lead diameter) and replace the broken one on the rotring. To do this, simply remove the head from the zebra pencil and push the stabilizer through the head (by placing against a metal surface or notebook and applying a downward force). Then carefully align the stabilizer on the rotring and slide it into the head (same process except push the pencil down onto the stabilizer).

Another con of this pencil is that the design readily wastes lead. There is a significant gap between the lead feed mechanism and the end of the lead stabilizer making each stick of lead only about 2/3s usable. So be prepared with additional lead.

Finally, the lettering on the barrel of the pencil wears off. This detracts from the aesthetic appeal of the pencil as a whole. However in the black version, once all the lettering is gone, the effect is minimal. Yet for a $25 pen, this flaw is significant.

Overall I enjoy the pencil, yet keep in mind the drawbacks while you are making your purchase decision.
