4.0 out of 5 stars Simple but effective...
A simple yet effective magnetic induction pickup. The 'receiver' is nothing more than a telephone pickup coil connected to a mini speaker amplifier. Telephone pickup coils 'pick up' the sound via the electromagnetic disturbance around the earpiece. This is a much better deal than buying these items at the famous shopping mall radio store...

The only problem I...

Worked fine and very responsive, but.. after about 90 days it failed picking up any sound whatsoever, checked battery and internal connections no obvious damage. for the price it's ok, but for any long term use I'd spend more.

The only problem I see with this would be a steadily changing DC current may be hard or impossible to detect. You can clearly hear audio speakers and AC (house wiring) disturbances because it is modulated. Unmodulated steady EMF fields that would drive a meter above 10 may not be very noticeable as an audio signal.

EMF meters use the same type of pickup. However, since steady fields may not be audibly detectable, it's best used in conjunction with an EMF meter. This is an excellent way to monitor any fields for audible modulation. If you have a digital (or micro-cassette) voice recorder, the pickup coil can be plugged directly into the "Mic" input.

This is not a bad price, however it is a little cheaper at RadioShack. You don't get the pickup or the headphones if you go to Radioshack unless you pay extra. I received mine pretty quick after I ordered it. The reason I only gave it 3 stars is because mine was not very loud at all. I could barely hear it when it was turned up all the way. I tried an expensive microphone with it and heard close to nothing. The magnetic pickup it comes with is an inexpensive model, but it should still serve its purpose. When I used it around my electrical sockets, I could hear a faint sound even when the volume was turned all the way up. I believe this defect is from the factory. There was no evidence to suggest that the model I received was used or even damaged in shipping. I very well could have been damaged in the shipping, but it seemed to be packed pretty well. I had purchased it for the very reason it is advertised here. This is not the only Item I use, in fact I only bought it because of what it claims. I trust my wide array of other tools like digital recorders, FranksBox, and my EVP detectors.

Arrived in good timing and all. But I am not sure I like it. I thought from it's description you could hear evps in real time while on an investigation. But from what I gather is it's more like an emf detector that hums when disturbed. No voices.

Very simple to use. Wearing the headphones is a must, otherwise you can't hear much. Picked up EVPs on digital recorder, but did not hear it on EVP Listener. Probably best for Class A EVPs. Okay for beginners.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a real ITC device but great customer service, November 10, 2010

I ordered this for the purpose of ghost hunting, as it was cheaper than a PX device or Frank's box. The description is pretty clear in defining what it does - you hear noise when you're near electronic equipment and power lines and such. I have never heard anything other than the same noise, no voices or anything I would consider paranormal. I used this side by side with the K-II EMF meter and one would go off when the other wouldn't and vice versa so I'm not really sure what to make of it. This kit sold on Amazon is a combination of components you can pick up at any Radio Shack, but at a sale price of $19.95 it is cheaper to buy it through Amazon/Less EMF. The company that sells these has great customer service though and I would definitely buy from them again.

As a paranormal investigator I guess I may have been spoiled. While the unit performs as it should I'd pitch the earphones and include a microphone; not a cheapo one either.

Item arrived on time and in good shape.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Buy for your money, November 12, 2011
This review is from: EVP Listener
I got the franks box about 3 years ago to see if it could do the job. I tried it out in a grave yard that was very active. The speaker is not very strong so use head phones. When we used it we could hear nothing out of the franks box. When we got back for the night we listened to the audio on our digital tape recorder and were blown away! When we told this one crew member how the franks box worked a spirit answered back on the digital tape recorder and said. "That right it works like that" So this little box might be hard to hear the resopnses but does everything it says it does. If it does not live up to your exspectations then remember the old saying you get what you paid for. I love my radio shack franks Box and am happy with the price I paid for it. It is a must for any low budget ghost hunters equiptment box.

A little disappointed with this gadget because it is a little hard to hear using this listener. I guess you could add better headphones but by the time you do this the total cost would equal a better listener.
