5.0 out of 5 stars Meet a Wonderful Jazz Artist May 7, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Anyone who has read my previous reviews of her CDs knows I am a great admirer of Ms Sung's playing and writing. This new release is a perfect introduction for anyone who is unfamiliar with her work. Just as I think "Sungbird" is the best one to grab the attention of a listener whose experience consists mostly of classical music, "(re)Conception" strikes me as one that will immediately delight the Jazz listener. There are reasons for this besides the great playing: the inclusion of 5 standards (two of them by Ellington), the participation of the very familiar, impeccable rhythm team of Peter Washington (bass) and Lewis Nash (drums), and an overall relaxed, swinging feeling. The best Jazz players, to my mind, are those who advance the tradition while honoring it. Ms. Sung does this on every track, beginning with her own "(re)Conception", a George Shearing composition previously re-visited, re-conceived (and re-named) by Miles Davis as "Deception" from "Birth of the Cool" and "Take Off" from Miles Davis Blue Note Volume One. She plays "Crazy He Calls Me" with the tenderness that Billie Holiday brought to it, but in her very own sweet way. She takes the beautiful medium tempo 3/4 time ballad "Wives and Lovers" and takes it for a bright romantic fling. Another standard, "I Believe In You" is played with swing and virtuosity that no other player I can think of could match. The lovely and little-known "Far from Home" is an elegiac study that shows yet another side of her work. Ellington's "C Jam Blues" is a perfect example the old-bottle-new-wine approach of all great Jazz players. And these are just a few examples. You will not be disappointed by this recording, and you will want to hear more. Very highly recommended.
