Wonderful,

I walked into a small CD/DVD outfit in NYC since they had a good collection of funk and jazz in the window. I find the most interesting collections of music at places such as this, and I was welcome by the sound of this CD playing. The lounge electronica mix of classic and modern made me buy it immediately. Without a doubt - a fabulous 'chill' cd.

A lounger's dream,

Don't let the name fool you: most of the album is of the lounge variety of downtempo chillout music, not so much jazz. Yes there are plenty of jazz instruments and jazz beats, but the heavy electronica vibe overwhelms these elements, and the very mainstream vocals (sometimes a bit... too mainstream, as with People Come Running, by far the worst track on the album) detract somewhat from a straight-up jazz album. That said, this album can be very enjoyable in the right mood. The first half is the most decidedly jazzy part of the album (with a random reggae song thrown in, for reasons I'm not entirely sure of), and the middle is the most electronica. The last half is my favorite though, minus the last song (which is unspeakably bad). The simple serenity of Second Sight just melts away your troubles, followed by my favorite track La Mouche Lumire (a song Bombay Dub Orchestra would be proud of) and another breathless beauty Arena. None of these tracks are very jazzy, but who cares, they're gorgeous. If you know what this album's true sound is (and the "remix" should be a big clue that it's not really nu-jazz), you'll enjoy it. I bought it on a whim for $7 at a local CD store to give me a good road trip album, and it worked. |
