Stieg Larsson, who lived in Sweden, was the editor in chief of the magazine Expo and a leading expert on antidemocratic right-wing extremist and Nazi organizations. He died in 2004, shortly after delivering the manuscripts for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.

I am not a mystery or thriller afficianado. I like novels, that is, books that are novel. This is in spades. Intelligent, complex, and exquisitely crafted, it has kept me awake at night reading when I should be recovering from the day. I have just ordered the second book in the trilogy because I know that I won't want to turn to another author when I have finished with this. Would that I could read it in the original, then I would not have to wait for the third to be translated. Fascinating. As compelling a book as I have read this year.
