No other writer has the depth and critical thinking that Caso shows in these books. Some of his theories may be out of date, but he still is the major reference when it comes to the history of the Mixtec kings. His identification of the codices as pertaining to the region and his first attempt at reading the dates inscribed in them was the key that opened many of the studies which used the painted histories to ressearch these genealogies.
