[UPDATE #2: Added 5th star. The game now has instructions and a video instruction link to youtube. The game still has a few things I'd like to improve, but the developer has shown himself committed to making it the best he can, and has really given some great discussion and feedback. That alone says quite a bit to me, and with the addition of instructions and the video link, I feel comfortable recommending this game to others and rating it with five stars. :) ]

[UPDATE: The developer assured me the application pauses and makes way for phone calls. He also is looking at adding tutorial and/or instructions and other changes, so future customers might want to check to see if the issues I and other reviewers have posted have been addressed.]

The hexagonal field makes this an unusual twist on Minesweeper. There doesn't seem to be a maximum width or height, but there are minimums for width and height of 5 hexagons each. The density of mines is set using a percentage between 10% and 50%. I haven't played enough to get the hang of determining where the bombs are in relation to the numbers. It seems that there is more guess work, at least at the very beginning of the game with high mine densities. At low densities, large swaths of the field are cleared for you.

The top bar shows the number of bombs, the elapsed time, and touching it switches between "flag" mode and "Dig" modes, which remain until switched.

Since there is no tutorial or instruction, I recommend starting at a small width and height, and a small density. It is similar enough to classic Minesweeper that you can quickly pick up the strategy.

I picked this game up because it was the free app of the day today. When I jumped into a game, I immediately adjusted to the hex based variant of the classic minesweeper. Some of the reviews say that you have to guess some of the time, but minesweeper has ALWAYS required you to guess sometimes. I personally really enjoy the twist and genuinely think it makes the game better. The only flaw is it is a little harder to switch between flag and dig than it could have been. Otherwise, it really great and I say it is worth the $2.50.

Minesweeper is not for squares anymore! Square cells, that is. As you can see from the icon, this one uses hexagonal cells. This makes the game a little more difficult as you don't get that diagonal "reach" to sense 8 adjacent cells. Here you "see" only six. The bomb density seems slightly lower to compensate for this, giving a well balanced game that rarely requires outright guessing. The adjustable grid size seems limited only by you device's memory.

(I am amazed that some reviewers seem never to have played any form of minesweeper before. Minesweeper has been around for over 20 years, since early versions on Windows. Search in Apps for "minesweeper" to find traditional square-cell versions. Yes, you may sometimes be able to guess in order to win. And yes, most versions have two interface modes, "Dig" and "Flag". The only version of minesweeper I know of that has a very nice "modeless" input system is Hexapper on iOS devices, though there may be others.)

I've loved the classic Minesweeper for quite a long time. Minesweeper: Unlimited! is a great twist with hexagons instead of squares. I wasn't sure I'd enjoy it at first, but I'm finding it difficult to put down. A great FAOTD.

The hexagonal playing tiles make you have to consider your moves with more thought than with the traditional square tiles. It's more than just a time killer as you have to use more strategic thinking.

It's great that you can customize your playing field, sound on/off, vibration on/off and whether or not you want to be able to switch between flagging and digging by using the icons on top or a right or left side thumb icon at the bottom. The ability to resize and scroll the playing field makes this App good for all size screens/devices. A solid four star App, with the only deduction being for unnecessary permissions.

If you're an old school Minesweeper fan, I think you'll enjoy this App.

Good classic game, but the user interface need more work. it's a hassle to toggle between flag and clear mode. some suggestion would be to assign clear to long hold, or to swipe left/right on each cell, where left would be clear, and right would be flag.

Funadamentally there's no reason this kind of game would have any permissions at all. Am very suspicious why access to my network, but in this age...that's the price for free-1star off, otherwise this is truly a wonderful variant to blocks minesweeper, small file size and looks great on my Samsung Note 10.1 tablet. Stable program and hours of challenging play.

Like mindsweeper but with limited use of logic. Occasionally in pc mindsweeper you're left with a 50/50 chance of picking the right cell. this game requires guessing frequently. Also the controls are awkward. played for an hour or so and deleted.

As Sheldon might say, "In what universe are all Minesweeper games solvable?" There are lots of possibilities where you're going to run into a situation requiring a guess, and yes, that guess might come after you've spent ten minutes and are down to a 50/50 chance with your last two squares (or hexagons in this case).

Whiney people who expect to win every game aside, this is a good but not perfect game. The actual play is as expected, my only beef is with the zooming. On a cell phone, I find it very difficult to zoom in and out (especially out). It seems there are "preferred" zoom levels, and it's difficult to reach a different zoom. And if you "pinch" over the game board, you're very likely to flag or dig in one of the hexagons your finger's over.

It is a bit tedious switching between flag mode and dig mode using the icon at the top, but never did it switch on its own. When in dig mode, the flag is obviously greyed out. When in flag mode, however, the shovel really doesn't look all that different. Because of this, some people may be confused about what mode THEY have selected. There is an option for having a hot-spot (bottom left or bottom right) that, while pressed will put you in dig mode and when not pressed you'll be in flag mode, but use of this feature is impractical on a cell phone.

With better zooming and other mode-switching options (single tap=flag, double tap=dig, left-swipe / right - swipe as suggested by another reviewer, and the inclusion of a "maybe" option), this game could be worthy of a 5. At least as the FAOTD.
