I ordered this to use with my Apple TV because my toddler slobbered all over our other one. The new remote came on time, was new in the package, and worked seamlessly without any annoying programming like most remotes require.
Seriously:
Step one- Open package
Step two- Point at Apple TV and use it
Step three- Spend an hour adding stuff you'll never watch to your Netflix Que

I own an Apple TV and a couple of months ago, I misplaced the remote that came with it. I made do without it for a while by using the remote app on my iPhone, but I finally caved and just bought a new remote. I prefer it to using the iPhone app. This remote is sleek and small and simple. It was very easy to pair the new remote with my Apple TV. It works beautifully and it is exactly the same remote that I originally had. And it was cheaper from Amazon than Apple.

I am very pleased with the Apple TV I got as a gift last christmas. I particularly love the simple, little remote. But the remote is small and easy to lose, particularly with a 3-year-old running around the house. One day it went missing and I needed a replacement. Ordered this one and it appears to be exactly like the original, which is exactly what I wanted. Oh, and the lost remote turned up a couple of weeks later in my daughters play purse. Now I have two!

I bought this product to use with my Mac Mini computer. There is a learning curve, but it's amazing how much you can learn by reading the instructions! This remote works natively with iTunes. It also will advance the slides in Keynote or Powerpoint presentations. Audio volume can also be controlled remotely.

The remote is beautiful in every respect except usage. Pressing buttons is hard because of the lack of tactile differentiation. The directional buttons are completely flat and they are easy to miss. For example, when trying to press the up button, you might find yourself hitting the aluminum casing instead.

That's unacceptable. There is no reason Apple can't make a remote that's tactile enough to easily differentiate among keys and easily press without looking. Actually they did, the old white Apple remote works perfectly in this regard.

Pros:
* Aluminum enclosure is beautiful.
* Very thin which is practical if you carry it with your laptop for presentations etc.
* Dedicated Play button is a plus.

Cons

* Buttons are flat and lack tactile differentiation.
* May require looking at the remote to see where you are pressing (which is a distraction if you use it for presentations).
* IR range is good but not as good as old white Apple remote.

I really wanted to like this remote and replace my older apple remotes, but the lack of tactile differentiation has forced me to switch back.

UPDATE (11-4-10):
There is a new aluminum remote that comes with the Apple TV 2 which features a minor redesign. The directional buttons now have some tactile differentiation, they are no longer flat which is a significant benefit over the old design. I would recommend it to anyone looking at this remote.

This is an authentic Apple product that works exactly as advertised. I bought this to replace a lost Apple TV remote and it works perfectly.

TOP 100 REVIEWERon June 16, 2013
You know, I'm not that old, but I remember when remotes were big clunky things with beautiful computer-beige bodies and the functions on a sticker that fell off so often it might as well have been marketed as removable. Of course, the culture of design changes almost as quickly as the technology that supports it - we have sleek (dare I say artistic?) computer cases, televisions that fade into the wall, and of course, control like the Apple remote. There's no doubt that this thing looks fantastic - I've always been in love with the anodized aluminum used by Apple, but there's something different about being able to palm it in remote form. I don't care if this thing was made by Apple or by Dell - it's a killer design.

I have the updated version of this remote (the one with the indented menu button), and though it could be called overly simplistic, it really does almost everything you want it to do. I use several of these remotes on a daily basis- one attached to our Apple TV, and the other for my iMac. For bedroom use, I love that it only has seven buttons - there's no fumbling around in the dark trying to remember if menu is to the left of the red button or on the right of the subtitles key - when using the Apple remote you know exactly what you're doing at all times. Integration with Apple products is of course excellent - the remotes were designed to be complimentary and they truly are.

The Apple Remote takes a CR2032 3 Volts Battery, easily accessed by twisting the cover on the back counter-clockwise. I was pleased to see they had updated the design from the white remotes - they were a PAIN to replace the batteries on. Speaking of batteries - one year of use and I have yet to replace a battery. I have no idea what expected battery life is (seeing as it will vary greatly depending on use), but for normal every day use I am very pleased.

So what's the caveat? It is simply NOT comfortable to hold in your hand. I mean, it's an experience and everything, but much like the iPad 2 and 3 and the iPhone from 4 onwards, Apple doesn't seem to be too concerned with the comfort of their edges. I know, I know, they LOOK fantastic, but so did the original iPad and they had rounder edges there. Either way, I don't hold this all day like I do my portable devices, but it's worth mentioning.

I'm still rating this at five stars for sheer form and function, but I would not be disappointed to see a slight rounding of the edges. Highly recommended.

This is a great product. I don't like how ' has stopped including it with new computer purchases, but it is a great device. The design is very sleek and simple, with a pleasant contour to your hand. It feels very well built and durable.

Not only does it work with Front Row - which essentially is an AppleTV style menu that browses through all of your iTunes media, photographs, and allow you to watch current movie trailers - but it works with other programs as well. I got this in conjunction with an HDMI cable to hook up my MBP to my TV - and I can put on a movie in VLC (media player) and the remote is able to play/pause, fast-forward, rewind, adjust volume, and switch in and out of full screen mode.

Can't really say anything bad about this product. It's a very handy product, the price is reasonable (although it SHOULD be included with a Mac!), and it does even more than I expected it to.

If you're someone who had previously owned the older remote, you'll get used to this one right away. the layout is nearly the same with a few tweaks, some better than others.

Personally, I don't understand the reasoning why they made a Play/Pause button separate from the center button, since they both do the same thing (then again I don't use it for presentations, so I can't say that it is entirely useless).

The newly styled remote matches Apple's new line of aluminum built computers and as always has that beautiful and sleek design you'd expect from Apple. If you connect your mac to your tv or watch movies directly off your iMac, get this remote, since other remotes and wireless keyboards can be very bulky and/or expensive.

Bottom line, get this remote if your other one has failed or if you want to match your remote with your newer model mac.
