4.0 out of 5 stars Good turntable, but don't bother upgrading the phono cartridge, March 23, 2007
This review is from: Ion TTUSB Turntable with USB Record (Discontinued by Manufacturer) (Electronics)
This is a pretty decent turntable for the price. It works well under Linux with the Audacity software, although if you're digitizing old vinyl that needs significant work to remove noise and clicks you'll be better off using something more sophisticated for the post-processing like gwc (also free software). One word of caution though: don't bother upgrading the phono cartridge. The turntable case is made entirely of plastic and the internal electronics are unshielded. After some use with the stock cartridge with decent results, I upgraded it to a Shure M97xE and was surprised to find it picking up an unacceptable amount of hum from the turntable.[*] The stock phono cartridge appears to be enclosed in a metal case (self-sheilded), and may be their cheap alternative to shielding the turntable. If I had to do it over again I'd probably go for a higher-end turntable.

[*] Placing a layer of aluminum foil on the platter under the mat in contact with the grounded metal spindle reduced the hum noticably.

I'll be damned. The aluminum foil DOES help.
It always helped when I put it on my head (blocking those pesky voices), guess I should have known.
